Expansion dead in the water

Yep OK

So Russell and James own Souths.

I think my team is owned by the leagues club and therefore members...

Not sure who gets any profit, I guess it gets reinvested in expansion and junior development.

souths is owned by:
crowe (37.5%)
packer (37.5%)
financial members of the club (25%)

the financial members have control over the team colours, team name, home grounds

Warriors 100% privately owned. 50% each by Eric Watson and Owen Glenn.

I really hope there are no major factions calling no expansion not to take place... Certain Sydney clubs that refuse to share the pie and the Broncos monopoly on Brisbane

Brisbane, Manly, Souths, Warriors, Melbourne all privately owned
Cowboys, Canberra owned by leagues club?
Dragons, Titans, Wests, Knights, owned/owe NRL
Canterbury, Penrith, Eels, Roosters, Sharks all district RL clubs?

Have to agree with Smith. Australia's on the verge of a recession. Not the time to go setting up football clubs. Get the big TV cheque, consolidate the foundations.

Yeah better get ready for it, this housing Market will explode with it.

I actually think being a former banker that he can see the writing on the wall.

Aus will be in recession soon and when it is, expansion teams like GWS and Suns are the last thing the code needs.

clubs like perth would actually MAKE money for the nrl, which means they could give the nrl clubs a bigger grant, which would actually HELP the struggling clubs

That does seem logical if it can bring new money. But remember the additional costs too with a team that far away. Still we could truly be a national code if that happened

What does truely nation mean? And why does it matter so much?

I think truely national was coined by the AFL media types to make us feel insecure. They were using the phrase even before their 17th/18th teams joined. Don't take the bait.

Expansion of teams in Auatralia is fraught with danger (so is reduction of Sydney teams). All the easy options to expand to were taken long ago. Each new team is harder to pull off.

It's time to restructure the whole competition. Make it one that will take the game into the future, not keep it in the past.

First step, cut the number of Sydney teams.

If we are to wait for the time that every team presently in the competition is self-sustainable then we will never have expansion. And the game will just wither away and die.

But but the game is stronger than ever!!

A billion dollars more but can't handle more clubs than there were in 1994. What a joke. That's what happens when 90% of that cash goes directly to the top 1% of players, their managers and the myriad suits and consultants at nrlhq.

The game needs to expand, as soon as it is prudent to do so.

But it needs to be well planned and well executed.

I agree we making existing clubs stronger first and getting the right planing in place.

We should not be looking at any forced mergers or re-locations of clubs.

The problem isn't too many Sydney clubs, it is that we have too few clubs in other locations.

As I posted elsewhere the comp would work best with 22 teams, that is 6 additional teams but obviously something like this can't be done overnight it may take 10-20 years to get there.

The next step is expansion to 18 teams, which should include Perth and another QLD (probably Brisbane) team. The key is to plan that properly with all the necessary preparations, both within the NRL and the new teams.

We may not be able to do expansion right now, but we can certainly plan for it.

As a time-frame I would like to see it happen in about 3 years, the economic cycle and the strengthening of other clubs can hopefully be achieved in that time-frame.

This may be too soon, but the next step is for the NRL to commit to expansion and outline a time-table, they are not ready to do that now, but I hope they soon will be.

The NRL clubs are the biggest problem the ARL commission has.
A majority are insular and have no proper business plan.

Including the ones the NRL owns or props up.

These dickheads say all clubs must be privately owned but refuse to listen to offers from interested parties for the knights and titans. So they must be privately owned but they are ensuring they can't be. Genius. Stalin would be proud of that style of leadership.

The only clubs that should be financially supported are those in strategic areas.

Could be argued that all 16 clubs are in strategic areas
Sharks have shown clubs can turn it around. Only a few years ago they looked in dire straits, now they look to be on the path of surviving on their own.
But let's look at the 4 current clubs the nrl is financially supporting at the moment.

Dragons: have one of the biggest traditional fan bases, and also supports the illawarra area. Can the nrl afford to lose them- NO

Knights: are in one of the biggest rugby league centres and have support throughout northern nsw. Can the nrl afford to lose them- NO

Tigers : are in one of the nrl's biggest areas for juniors and have a huge fan base when successful. The afl are currently trying (and failing) to steal the area from the nrl with the gws giants. Can the nrl afford to lose them- NO

Titans: we need more teams in QLD not less. Can the nrl afford to lose them- NO

Its already $7 mil per year with a push for $10 mil

Too many excuses and still no strategy

Seems expansion continues to be stuck with Pay-TV negitiations

Seems we are waiting for Pay-TV to cough up another $20 mil per year for a 5th game ?

Perth rugby league Test for Aussies and Kiwis
Nick Taylor
October 17, 2015, 10:56 am

An historic trans-Tasman rugby league Test will be played in Perth next year.

Australia and New Zealand, the top two teams in the world, will play the first Test staged in Perth at nib Stadium in October with the National Rugby League and the State Government set to finalise the deal.

Both teams will use the game in their build-up to the Rugby League Four Nations tournament in England and Scotland in October and November.

Playing the Test at the 20,500 capacity nib Stadium is a coup for the WANRL which is pushing for their West Coast Pirates franchise to be in an expanded national competition.

A decision on expansion in 2018 is expected early next year.

The match will also be a bonus for local fans with the possibility of three NRL games also being played in Perth next year.

South Sydney Rabbitohs have agreed to bring a match west for the eighth consecutive season after beating New Zealand Warriors 36-4 in front of a record 20,272 nib crowd in June.

It is understood at least two other clubs, including Manly, are interested in matches here.

The Sea Eagles brought a game to Perth three years ago when they beat the Warriors at Patersons Stadium.

The NRL have already confirmed plans to schedule rugby league World Cup games in Perth in 2017.
