FANS have overwhelmingly backed moves to expand to expand the NRL to an 18-team competition rather than relocate or dump longstanding Sydney clubs.

In a poll on www.telegraph.com.au, 75 per cent of supporters favoured an 18-team competition with Perth and a second Brisbane side the most popular choices.

The third most popular option was a second team out of New Zealand, well ahead of the fourth choice — a Central Coast team playing out of Gosford Stadium.

Fans are sick of Sydney, and the human hellholes they call stadiums.
They want a taste of the exotic like the other codes have, with teams in Perth, and Wellington.

They want big derbies like other codes to get excited about, not Sydney derbies that only 12 thousand turn up to if it is not raining.
The code needs to spread it's wings, open the door to the world, get out of Sydney, let the huge crowds that attend the Nines, the double header 4 nations at Suncorp, allow Brisbane to have a true world-class big city derby.
For fake's sake, get the code outta Sydney before the name hopoate sinks the code to it's death. amen.

Is that a derby like the broncos and titans that fills 60% of lang park!

Not every inter sydney game is a derby. Every club has its rivalries and the crowds at those reflect that. E.g roosters v sharks means nothing to either set of fans, while bulldogs v parra is an obvious rivalry and hets 30k plus

Absolutely. Perth + Brisbane 2 to be added for next tv deal.

Announce now that the Pirates are in, and call for all potential bids for Greater Brisbane to put in formal bid documents.

Run the figures, then choose a winner.

Then identify the next 2 expansion locations and work out a plan to get there. Set aside money to facilitate further mergwrs or relocations if Sydney clubs if they go broke.

Need to capitalise on New Zealand now. Get Wellington in. Not much of a surprise that Australian fans wouldn't vote to make them stronger.

Either relocate or merge a Sydney side to fit all three in.

I agree that Wellington should be one of the next two clubs in the comp, however the bold is an incredibly silly thing to say.

Australian fans not voting for a second NZ team has nothing to do with them not wanting to strengthen NZ RL, they just simply don't prioritise a second NZ team because they aren't as interested in RL in NZ as they are in RL in Australia.

In other word the average Australian RL fan is more interested in Perth and Brisbane (for example) because they are more excited by the idea of seeing those teams play because those cities are cities that have a larger effect on their lives (they live in them, they hear about them everyday, they have family that live in them, etc) then NZ does.

What stupid way to word the poll.

It's not an either or question, expansion and rationalization are not independent opposites, both can happen at the same time.

Wording the question like that just puts the authors agenda on show for all.

Yep empty afl stadiums look awesome with a game of rugby league getting played in it.

What has WA don't to deserve a team that Queensland hasn't?

Same goes for the kiwis

Firstly a Perth based team would play out of NIB stadium, which is a rectangular stadium.

Secondly what has Queensland done to deserve a 4th team that Perth hasn't done to get it's first?

To be fair Carch, the Western Reds used to get good crowds at the WACA when they were in the league.

Not forgetting NIB Stadium has always attracted good crowds when Sydney clubs have played over there and you can't tell me all of them have flown over from Sydney for the game.

Plus the fact the Titans are a basketcase doesn't help Queensland's cause either.

it is more a population thing.

getting 10% of perth and you have 150-200k fans

getting 25% of wellington and you are under 100k...

IMO Perth has to come in for the time slot advantages and the good of rugby league in Australia.

The big question is whether to put the next bid in the central coast or west Brisbane.

I reckon they should just go all out and put in all four and split into conferences of four. Now is the time to dominate. The interest is there.

The interest may be there for four new teams but no way is the talent depth sustainable for four new teams.

Some of the teams put out by Parra, the Snorks backline etc, have been pure dog shit.

We don't want shit teams like GWS getting smashed every week. Two teams at a time only.

actually the western reds crowds were shit house at the end.
the first year was great .........then the novelty wore off and they were crap.
for a one team state the stats were rubbish .
During that time period the sharks average crowd figures was better.

http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/teams/western-reds/comps.html

They ended up folding due to the huge cost of travel.

but by all means lets try it all again.

Super League did happen at the time though to be fair.

In saying that Melbourne's crowds were awful in their first few years despite being successful and look at them.

The one thing that hindered the Reds was the fact they were playing in a cricket ground totally unsuited to league.

Now that they'll be playing at NIB Stadium it should be a lot better this time around.
