I thought Cairns was AFL heartland.

    Not Townsville though.

Great initiative by the local RL bodies! It's little things like this that make the difference.

Apparently we're also the gay capital, join the dots.

    Srsly though, probably fairly even.

League is far more popular in cairns, despite huge amount of promotion fom afl cairns. They do a great job and getting the suns Richmond game was a great boost, but that combined with very favorable coverage in local paper creates a perception that afl is close to even. But it's no where near even when you compare any of the relevant numbers. There are far more juniors and seniors playing league, plus if you ever get to see a tv ratings break down league beats afl 4 to 1.

Further to Ants comments, you only have to go 20 feet outside of Cairns into the wider community to find there is nada AFL. On topic, that is an excellent initiative by the combined league stakeholders.
