I heard at the Reds game yesterday that there had been some trouble at the FreovRockingham game with the ref abandoning it after the 2nd all in all brawl! Anybody heard anything?

In an unprecedented move, the game between the Fremantle Roosters and Rockingham Sharks was called off after the referees walked from the field because of alleged objects being thrown by the crowd. At the time Fremantle Roosters were leading the Sharks 14 to 8. The incident followed a scuffle in the middle between the two sides in the first half and another in the second. There was still 25 minutes to go on the clock and it will now be up to the League to make a decision on the game’s outcome.
Central Bulldogs played a top quality brand of football and could have beaten any side as the team went on a point scoring romp against the bottom side Willagee Bears. With a final score line of 110 to nil there was the argument that a mercy rule should have been called as the Bulldogs virtually had a training run. With try scorers across the field, the best for the Bulldogs included full back Tim Cook and second rower David Kahuria.
North Beach continued their recent good form with a convincing 50 to 10 win over the Joondalup Giants. The loss now makes it hard for the Giants making the final series.
Leading from the start the Sea Eagles were never threatened and had good players in Nathan Jones, Benny Kenny and Scott Cherry who also scored 4 tries. Daniel Jennings was best for the Giants.
South Perth Lions easily accounted for Kalgoorlie Brothers 66 to 6 on their visit to the Goldfields. In another lop sided game for the day, the Lions were never challenged and had good players across the park.

From the Rockingham website:
The Sharks vs Fremantle game was called off after spectators continued to hurl abuse and allegedly throw a can at a volunteer referee.
The game was a farce from the start when it was discovered the field was only 58 steps wide...it must be at least 68 metres. And its not as though an extra 10 metres could not be found as the ground was marked well inside the fence. Other problems included:

The 20 metre line was 15 metres in.

The goal posts are disgraceful.

There was no ball boys until we supplied them

They had two balls which were the Spartan Training balls.

If that was the case that there was only one ref at the game that is a big joke!!!!! I was at Willagee and they had 4 officials at the game and one of them was the ref who was going to blow the pea at the REDS game on the Sunday.

There is NO minimum width of an International Rugby League ground. The max width is 68 metres.

This is primarily because many English games were played on local soccer fields, hence they were lucky to hit about 60 metres wide.

Olympic Park in Melbourne is 62 metres wide for NRL games, and Carlaw Park in Auckland used to be about 58 metres wide for full Internationals.

So if there is no space left on a ground, having a narrower field is not an issue. The fact Fremantle appears to have done it deliberately and not utilised all the space seems a fair issue.

Don't they have additional pitches nearby if I remember?

From the Rockingham website:
League makes decision. The Fremantle vs Sharks game has been determined a draw which punishes both teams for some ordinary spectator behaviour. Thru no fault of either side or players they have lost the chance to maintain their position on the ladder and may even cost Fremantle a finals berth. In the wash up I suppose one point is better then none however the WARL need to ensure volunteer referees are protected.

Would have thought it was the home clubs responsibility to ensure crowd behaviour? How exactly are the WARL supposed to protect referees? Maybe a rottweiler for touchies?
