SHATTERING DEFEAT FOR VODAFONE JUNIOR WARRIORS IN NYC PRELIMINARY FINAL

Brisbane scored inside the last minute to steal a 28-26 win to deny the Vodafone Junior Warriors a place in next Sunday’s inaugural NYC grand final.

Holding onto a 26-24 lead in the 79th minute, the Vodafone Junior Warriors conceded a goal-line drop-out and faced defending one last set.

They seemed to have shut the set down when a fortuitous last-tackle kick ricocheted off a foot back into Brisbane’s grasp for interchange player Tom Butterfield to score between the posts.

The heartbreaking try ended what had been an impressive run by the Vodafone Junior Warriors, putting the second-ranked Broncos into the title decider against the minor premiers the Canberra Raiders next weekend.

It was a devastating reverse for the Vodafone Junior Warriors after they had worked their way into a useful lead after yielding a 0-12 deficit inside 14 minutes.

By halftime they were only 10-12 behind after tries by centres Patrick Ah Van and Rusty Bristow.
And when they struck with two touchdowns in the space of four minutes early in the second half they looked to be in sound shape for the grand final.

First back rower Steve Rapira was sent across and then fullback Kevin Locke scored the most spectacular try of the night, collecting a last-tackle Brisbane kick on the fly and scorching 100 metres for his 15th try of the season.

But Brisbane drew back to 18-22 with centre Brendon Gibb’s converted try in the 58th minute.
With the game teetering, the Vodafone Junior Warriors again gained an advantage, halfback Isaac John working a superb run around with Sonny Fai to grab his 11th try of the year.

Locke couldn’t convert leaving the side 26-18 ahead with seven minutes to play.

But Brisbane reacted with a second try to winger Jharal Yow Yeh in the 76th minute and then Butterfield’s dramatic late effort to leave the Vodafone Junior Warriors in a shattered state.
With his try and three goals Locke finished the season with 236 points.

Broncos Young Guns Into Grand Final
Greg Davis

SEVEN days after Melbourne destroyed Brisbane's NRL premiership hopes in the dying seconds, the ``Baby Broncos'' qualified for the under-20 grand final with a miraculous last-minute try in Sydney last night.

Brisbane will play Canberra in the under-20 decider at Telstra Stadium next Sunday after snatching a remarkable 28-26 victory over New Zealand at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Broncos trailed 26-24 with less than 60 seconds remaining after the young Warriors had dominated much of the contest with their bigger, older forwards steamrolling through the middle of the ruck.

A desperate grubber kick allowed interchange forward Michael Spence to break through the New Zealand defensive line and he found a flying Tom Butterfield in support to score the match-winner.

The Anthony Griffen-coached Broncos looked out of the contest after Warriors halfback Isaac John scored in the dying minutes to establish a 26-18 buffer.

But the second of Jharal Yow Yeh's two tries gave Brisbane an unlikely shot at glory.

Brisbane led 12-0 after 15 minutes through tries to winger Mitch Rivett and Yow Yeh.

However, New Zealand seized the momentum in the back half of the entertaining opening period to reduce the Broncos' buffer to two points with centre pairing Patrick Ah Van and Rusty Bristow capitalising on the bullocking runs of prop Russell Packer.

Tries to interchange forward Steve Rapira and fullback Kevin Locke put the Warriors in command.

But life was breathed back into Brisbane through a try to centre Brendon Gibb from a Ben Hunt kick.

The Broncos will start the inaugural under-20 season showpiece as underdogs as Canberra has won both times the teams have met this year.

That was a terrible result for the competition

Brisbane were in no way comparable to the Warriors. It was men against boys. One of the most undeserving victories I have ever seen.

You will get over it.

You have to play to the full 80 Minutes not 79minutes and 50 seconds.
