I am wondering why Johns, Lewis, Fittler, Sterling and Lockyer haven't coached first grade to this point in time?
Who would suit Saints best as a coach?
I would take Lewis knows the backs and forwards

Fittler has. But for the rest, I agree. But yeah, I do see your point, especially Fittler, why he doesn't coach for often, and also Johns, Sterlo and Locky. Wally not so much. Maybe they don't coach because they're happy @ channel 9, I'm not sure.

Probably cause not all great players make good coaches.

Also, as 'Kogarah Warrior' has said and l think Sterlo has mention over time, 'Why leave a Nine where they are paid well and can offer advise, without being hated by fans and get sacked by a club'.

Wally as a great player but he is probably the first to say he wasn't cut out for coaching, remember the Gold Coast Giants?

Fittler doesn't have the stamina to coach and fell apart when the pressure got too much at Uncle Nicks.
Johns certainly wouldn't cut it as a coach but can best serve in short bursts as an adviser.

Lockyer is probably too smart to try his hand at coaching.

Notice how ex players who were 'Neville Nobodies' tend to make better coaches?
Rorters coach, Sharks coach, Broncos coach, all premiership winning coaches yet basic players.

Fair enough though it would be an interesting competition with all the above coaching.

I'd take Sterlo undoubtedly. Down to earth and a great footy brain. Players would love him and play for him.

Probably the simple explanation that it would be a drop in salary and a shitload more pressure that they don't particularly want.
Both Lewis and Fittler gave it a go and were sacked. Joey Johns is a halves coach at the Roosters after a previous assistant role at Manly. Lockyer is a Director on the Broncos Board. They have all chosen different paths in the League World that best suites their needs and lifestyle.

You'd have to absolutely insane to lose a steady, long term and well payed media position for a coaching position.

Say goodbye to all stability and reputation the moment you begin.

There's so a lot more to being a coach than technical knowledge, otherwise Matt Elliot and Jason Taylor would have been far more effective than they were.

Man management, composure, leadership skills are all as important.

Well it's probably because coaching takes a certain level of commitment that probably isn't worth giving up what they already have, especially when some of them already coach (or have the opportunity to coach) in a part time capacity.

Sterling has a smart mind but he has never expressed interest even though he could have coached NSW at some stage. He now has a role with NSW advising Daley and is an extension of what he already does.

Johns would be a good specialist halves/skills coach but there's too much management involved with head coach for him to be effective.

Fittler has already coached at NRL level but he was a reluctant coach and we saw the results of that. I think he is interested in helping out but not so much coaching in a full time capacity. He is involved with coaching rep teams and junior reps which suits him.

I don't know enough about Lewis, will let others comment.

I think Lockyer could be the best coach overall out of that group if he set his mind to it but again he would have to be interested and he's probably content in his current role.

From all reports it's virtually a 24/7 job. The blokes you've mentioned are probably earning just as much in the media to do a much more comfortable, less time consuming and far less cut throat gig.

I know Johns has stated emphatically that he has zero desire to be a full time coach.

For what it's worth Thurston has also completely dismissed the idea post retirement.

Lewis coached the Gold Coast Chargers in 1992/3. It didnt go so well. In 92 Lewis made history by becoming the first captain/coach of an NSWRL team since Bob Fulton.

Too much responsibility, these days less means better, Imagine McGregor captain coach for the Steelers back 1996-1998.

I think it helps having on field generals as well. Bellamy has had Smith and Cronk for 10 years.

It helps when you actually have extra coaches on the field.

And it probably explains why Mal Meninga won 9 straight Origins having Cronk, JT and Smith running the ship.
