French players who could do well in the NRL

Morgan Escare (Wigan) Small but exciting attacking full back, speedy and agile, whose defence has improved greatly since he moved from Catalans to Wigan and bulked up. He can also kick goals.

Eloi Pelissier (Leigh) Small but exciting hooker who usually comes off the bench but plays like a jack in the box.

Theo Fages
(St. Helens) Small but exciting half/five eighth who has good passing skills, an excellent attacking kick game close to the opponent's line and can score tries himself. Though small in stature he doesn't shirk defence.

Tony Gigot (Catalans) Plays full back for Catalans but is probably better at centre. Very agile attacking player. He had a stint in Australia and at London Broncos where he did not shine, before he developed into a very good player for Catalans.

Lucas Albert (Catalans) Very young five eighth (18) who needs a couple more years of development at Super League level before he ventures into the NRL. Naturally gifted runner who will grow quickly under a good coach (which he doesn't now have).

Benjamin Jullien (Warrington). Solid attacking and defending second rower, who can also play centre. He is 97kg and 5'10". Still young (22) and probably a bench player at first.

Gavin Marguerite (Toulouse) An exciting young (19) prospect at centre or wing. Not yet playing at Super League level but will blossom when he does, especially if he has a good coach. Expect him to be snapped up by an NRL club within 3-4 years.

I can confirm through my ESL contacts that every one of those players have been approached by an NRl club at some point in the last year and turned down any offer to come.

They were quick to point out that while they are intrigued by the idea of playing in the NRL none of them want to be that first Frenchman who attempts to fill the Remi Casty boots.

Hopefully none, the game in France needs all the talent it can't muster with hopefully two sides in the SL next season.

I expect this thread to be snapped up by the cave within 3-4 hours.

Real rocks and diamonds player, more rocks than diamonds, way too small for NRL.

Eloi Pelissier
(Leigh) Small but exciting hooker who usually comes off the bench but plays like a jack in the box.

Lots of energy, not tough enough for NRL. Not good enough game management for a NRL hooker.

Theo Fages
(St. Helens) Small but exciting half/five eighth who has good passing skills, an excellent attacking kick game close to the opponent's line and can score tries himself. Though small in stature he doesn't shirk defence.

Also rocks and diamonds, but shows a lot of promise. Young, may do well in a forgiving NRL structure, as long as expectations are moderated. Over hyped in Super League, wouldn't be good to come to the NRL with that sort of expectation.

Tony Gigot
(Catalans) Plays full back for Catalans but is probably better at centre. Very agile attacking player. He had a stint in Australia and at London Broncos where he did not shine, before he developed into a very good player for Catalans.

More experienced, larger (but still too small for NRL) version of Escare, even more extreme rocks and diamonds, great highlights, terrible lowlights. Not the consistency needed for NRL

Lucas Albert
(Catalans) Very young five eighth (19) who needs a couple more years of development at Super League level before he ventures into the NRL. Naturally gifted runner who will grow quickly under a good coach (which he doesn't now have).

A bit of a surprise, has done really well this year, helping the whole Dragons team lift into one of their more consistent seasons. I agree, still too young and inexperienced for NRL, but one to watch.

Benjamin Jullien
(Warrington). Solid attacking and defending second rower, who can also play centre. He is 97kg and 5'10". Still young (22) and probably a bench player at first.

I haven't seen much of him, he is new at the top level I think. Doesn't look powerful enough for NRL, not getting huge game time or setting the field alight in a pretty poor Wolves pack this season.

Gavin Marguerite
(Toulouse) An exciting young (19) prospect at centre or wing. Not yet playing at Super League level but will blossom when he does, especially if he has a good coach. Expect him to be snapped up by an NRL club within 3-4 years.

Haven't seen him yet. Hopefully Toulouse get a shot at Super League soon and we can see more of their players.

Casty by the way, is in as good form as I've ever seen, but still probably not up to NRL.

I think Bousquet is doing OK this season, and has the size to do well in the NRL, has cleaned up his game a bit and coming to the "tough" part of his career, could be a possibility.

Thing is a lot of SL players you can't pick until they get here, see Sam Tomkins and Josh Hodgson as prime examples of high and low. French players would be no different to English, eventually one will come and be a success story which could open the floodgates ala Gareth Ellis and the steady flow of English imports every year after.
