but he would have passed the ballot clause if he wins today. that's my point. if he doesn't miss the start, he SHOULD win. therefore passing the ballot clause and getting a penalty to move him to 33rd in OOE. that's without taking a few horses out as they aren't officially out yet
Yep, I understand that. But he didn't
I think you may have said it too, he wasn't assured a win if he got away with them... He may have got caught up on the rails etc, who knows.

i'm just curious as to how the connections of a horse, that put in a run that the commentator said was "the best thing beaten of all time" (exaggeration noted), will be penalised because their horse was denied a fair start, and therefore a chance at winning
I look at it from the other angle. If you want to get your horse in the Melbourne Cup, get it qualified and get it high enough on the order of entry. If you leave it to chance and require a win etc in the start before the cup, then that's racing if you miss out. You don't get in, bad luck

that's my only problem. but anyway, they'll get their chance in the SAAB and we'll all be able to see how good/bad it goes. does any place in the SAAB pass the balloting clause? he'd still need a miracle if he doesn't get exempt or penalised
Needs to win. But on todays run, and if it's a live chance in the Melbourne Cup it will do that. If not, aim for it next year.
Anyway, it's Gai in Melbourne... Couldn't really expect it to all go well
