That’s a massive knock on. He’s running backwards so it floats backwards with his momentum but it’s initially forward out of the hands.

Similar to a pass which is backwards out of the hands but floats forward.

Forget that, his brother Bernard is now the refs boss. Bernard's best mate, Tony Archer created a new position for himself as some national head of referee's. It's a nice cozy relationship, not to mention with the other brother Chris as an NRL referee.

KNOCK-ON means to knock the ball forward towards the opponents’ dead ball line with hand or arm while playing at the ball

So technically it was a knock back and nobody would have a problem with it except that for decades refs have basically played drop ball rule where only the most obvious knock backs are adjudicated that way.
