Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told Sky News he will cross the floor of parliament and vote against any attempt by the Government to legislate a clean energy target - threatening the Coalition's one seat majority.

'It would be unconscionable, I underline that word unconscionable, for a government that was originally elected promising to abolish the carbon tax and to end Labor's climate change obsessions to go further down this renewable path.' he said.

In a bid to stop further subsidies for renewables, Mr Abbott argued Australian energy policies will make no significant difference to the reduction of global emissions.

'By all means lets reduce our emissions but the problem is that Australia produces about 1 per cent of the world's total emissions and nothing that we do in this country is going to make any substantial difference.' Mr Abbott said.

'Sure, climate change is significant but it is buy no means the greatest moral challenge of our time.'

The former Prime Minister says the most important thing the Government can do is not implement any more subsidies for renewables - and address the need for base load power.

'We have to respect people who have made investments under the existing system. We don't want additional sovereign risk factors to be bedevilling our economy but no further subsidies. No additional renewables.'

'The other thing we've got to do is address the market failure which political risk has caused. It's not so much market failure as government failure.'

'Power generation is an essential service and if the market won't build coal fired power stations, if the market won't build base load power the government has got to do it.'

Except that in his actions, .............................

'We have to respect people who have made investments under the existing system. We don't want additional sovereign risk factors to be bedevilling our economy but no further subsidies. No additional renewables.'

..............the above becomes rather problematic, as we need long term policy stability in order to attract investment in infrastructure that will only provide adequate return on capital over decades.

out of touch? im pretty sure spiraling energy prices are really quite a concern for australians

the guy who is out of touch is the one you support who wants to make it cost more

it is absolute madness to march ahead with a pipe dream and put at risk our own countries energy security and reliability and im just staggered that its even got this far

he is suggesting that the government should invest in infrastructure that the market will not and you are agreeing with him..!! this seems to conflict with your entire belief system....

You may know more, but I thought Tone's career before politics was writing articles complaining about lefties

One year managing a concrete plant makes you an expert at small business now?

You're claiming that 12 month of middle management in a job he got from nepotism, not merit, is somehow valuable.

I am claiming that he was involved in small business management chatty. I made no comment whatsoever about how effective or otherwise he was

Yet again you were unable to stop yourself from dishonestly trying to attack a view I didn't even post

And that is why your opinion is the second most worthless on the forum

Says a guy who misquotes others posts......

And it's good to know that you admit that you're the most worthless poster on these forums. Now go misquote someone and cry about it.

    Um, when?

I am quite obviously not referring to myself chatty

Yet another post gets dishonestly misrepresented. Just can't help yourself, can you?

Maybe it became a "small business" after 12 months of Tone's management
