Hagan my hero: The story

When I was a young boy I didn't even watch the NRL but a face would come onto the screen that compelled me. His name was Michael Hagan and he was our most successful coach of the modern era taking us to multiple finals appearances and beating us in a grand final. He was only foiled by a cheating Storm line-up and who knows where we, he and I would have been without them.

When I saw this face I knew that he was going to play a vital role in my future. His calm, gentle demeanor was full of life and vibrancy. I wanted to touch my television screen and his face the first time he came on but I controlled myself. These were urges that could not be controlled in my later adult life and urges that still haunt me today.

I remember when I saw him in person for the first time. It was only a dream but it felt so real. We were both huddled together under a bus stop as the sky began draping our vision with torrents of rain. We both did not have an umbrella but luckily enough I had a thick, wooly coat. I did not know who he was at this point of my dream or in reality, only gathering his face from a brief glimpse of him that I saw him on television. Although it was only a dream I was naturally wary of offering my coat to a stranger but it was big enough to fit the both of us inside of. I pulled it over our heads and we continued in our desired direction with the coat draped over the two of us which happened to be the same restaurant.

Hagan removed my wet coat for me and placed it on a rack at the door. He came up behind me and gave me a thankful embrace with a wry smile on his face, a smile that I would eventually fall in love with.

Years later in reality he inspired me with his coaching masterstrokes that we never before seen from an eels coach in the modern era. People talk about destiny as though it isn't real but I believe from my dream he eventually became involved in my life by becoming my most favorite Parramatta coach of all time. Destiny is real.

I just thought I'd share this story with you all.

I appreciate the symbolism, and let us not forget that Michael Hagan is the only Eels coach since Monie to win a premiership.
