BAck when he took on the job he was pretty visionary and unafraid to rattle cages in what he saw the game needed to do. 10 months on and he's been lost in the offices of nrl HQ and gone silent. Has anyone seen him recently?

The NRL season should be cut by at least four rounds and new teams from Perth, South-East Queensland and New Zealand added to the competition, according to new NRL Head of Strategy Shane Richardson.

The former Souths CEO also said there was no guarantee all nine Sydney clubs would survive under his vision for the game.

Discussing his blueprint to improve the NRL, Richardson said the season must be streamlined to reduce player burnout, which was a major concern given the current packed schedule with 26 rounds and three mid-week State of Origin matches.

"It’s not about quantity, its quality. Certainly we can reduce it (the season) to 22 games or even 20," Richardson told The Daily Telegraph.

"Then look at State of Origin and stand-alone weekends. We look at the pre-season and control that a lot better.

"Then international football. We’ve got to lock in what we want to do then take it to the broadcasters for the next television deal."

Looking ahead to future broadcasting rights, Richardson said adding new teams was critical for the code, particularly spreading the game to the west coast.

"We’ve got to expand. I’m not so concerned about the number of teams, it’s the number of fixtures," he said.

"The bigger the expansion the better it is for the TV networks. I think Western Australia deserves a side, we need another team in South-East Queensland and New Zealand is crying out for another team.

"The opportunities there in the next media deal are huge. I think we can make some good decisions fairly quickly."

I'm sure when he's done his research, his reviews and has his proposals ready to present (if he hasn't already), he'll present them to the people that he should present them too. And that's not us.

He's been completely undermined by the TV deal rights being given away early and with no competition and without any of those things on the table. Makes almost everything he said obsolete.

If you expect anything meaningful, ever from Richo then I have a harbour bridge to sell. Richo has always been a complete and utter waste of space. Michael Maguire couldn't cop the guy at Souths and when he gave them the ultimatum that if Richo didn't go, he would go instead, Souths acted quickly. The new guy there seems to be a massive upgrade on Richo btw.

Richardson sounds like a smart man who knows what has to be done, but it seems like some at the nrl don't agree with him

He thought he as joining the NRL to set the blueprint for the comp and has been relegated to looking at the nsw cup!

of Game Review, which focuses heavily on creating a genuine second tier for the game.
To do so, Richardson is expected to recommend that new franchises will be introduced in an expanded 14-team NSW Cup from regional and rural areas, as well as Fiji and New Zealand.
Albury, Coffs Harbour and Tamworth are among the areas that have been mentioned as possible locations for future NSW Cup franchises, while a Fiji bid team involving Petero Civoniceva is aiming for inclusion in 2017.
"Some of the work 'Richo' is doing in his blueprint around the second tier and around the regions will I think see a significant shift in terms of the broader footprint," Smith said.

To borrow a Doustism, "organic growth" is actually a much smarter form of expansion. Gallop's great expansion into Gold Coast was the opposite of that really and it hasn't exactly paid off. Much wiser to build the foundations first

The NRL are cowards. The game will never expand if we take the attitude that every club has to be in perfect health.

This year it's Wests, Newcastle and GC - give it 5 years and it will be someone else up shit creek. 5 years ago it was Cronulla. Before that it was Souths.

The struggles of these clubs would have literally no effect on any expansion club.

f**king cowards

Totally agree Adam, who is actually pulling the NRLs' strings ?.

Current financial realities. This may well change when Rupert realises without the NRL,his Foxtel will be shafted.

Titans presently undergoing a board restructure and buyers apparently waiting in the wings.

When the NRL has $17bn -$2bn locked away in TV deals, the landscape re expansion could well change .

Why commit to anything large, when TV deals are still unresolved.

He was lambasted by the NRL hierarchy for that interview. It was seen as a leak. He has been told to get on with his state of game report and release the findings when they are complete, not before.

You are criticising him for doing his job professionally.

By the same token why pre-emptively refuse progress (again) because some clubs can't sort themselves out - clubs in a debatably overcrowded market, mind you.

On proposes because the NRL have learnt the lesson of Super league.Remove clubs or make them joint ventures, loses fans in many cases forever. And provides opposition codes with new found support as teh swans and Tahs were able to do_One thing in business you should never give your competition an even break.

The clubs with the big problem are the ones nowhaving pro boards put in place. It makes sense to have your organisation with decent underpinning support, than to have weak clubs hanging around and expand at the same time.
NRL efforts should be concentrated on one big issue at a time, not trying to put out grassfires everywhere ala Gallop.

Every day Foxtel is loosing subs to Netflix, Stan, Presto.

Why would the NRL sign a Pay deal now when in 1 years time Rupert will be crawling to pay for NRL content.

NRL Pay deal is worth more if we wait a year.

Be patient lads, David Smith and the ARLC are playing the long game.

Perhaps as well we should make it it a condition of signing up with Rupert is that he sacks Bourbon Becs and Rothfield :D

:lol::lol:

You can add Paul Kent to that also, his attempts to push Ruperts agenda on 360 has been very annoying.

So thats about 500k that can be culled from News wages and added to the NRL tv deal.

Great idea mate..

Very true i got netflix a month ago. Since then and the end of the regular footy season my foxtel viewing has been literally zero. The only thing stopping me from scrapping it is the lack of a big screen online stream.
