The AFL has admitted it took Heritage Week celebrations too far, after losing more than $500,000 on ticket sales in round 19. League commercial operations manager Ben Buckley told the Bladder the decision to charge a three-shilling entrance fee had seemed like a good idea at the time.
"It seemed like a nice touch," Buckley said. "Three shillings for the workers, sixpence for the unemployed, and a penny for the little tackers. How were we to know that would translate into massive financial losses?"
Buckley said the League would reconsider several other initiatives in time for next year's Heritage Week. "In hindsight, there were a few things we wouldn't do again," he said. "Forcing the larger players to grow intimidating, handlebar moustaches, for example, or encouraging journalists to commemorate especially brilliant performances with poetry. Mike Sheahan's limerick on Monday was a disgrace."
Players reported their own concerns arising out of the Heritage round, including the difficulty of running for more than two hours in knickerbockers. Hawthorn players were said to be outraged after discovering on Monday morning that Brylcreem takes more than four days to remove.
