The NRL has nothing to do with the broadcast of retro matches. The games are owned lock stock and barrel by the television networks that originally broadcast them.

No they aren't. They are owned by the organisation. Contracts state that once their contract is up, all games televised by them return to the NRL/ARL. That's fort all sports.

Actually, yes the retro games cost a fortune.
fox Sports have tried continuosly to get old games but the NRL make it price prohibitive.

Can't be that much. SportsAustralia used to show them - a different game every week "Great Games From The Past" - hosted by Steve Roach. And not like old games on NRLOnOptus which only went back a couple of years, GGFTP showed games from decades ago.

As for C7's plan to televise lower comps, what a load of crap that was. The cost of running an outside broadcast unit & the lack of viewers for the product would have killed that idea at conception.
Peoples eyes would pop at the amount of money 1 OB unit costs for a day.

Better tell Fox Sports that. From next year they'll be covering their own QLD Cup game, on top of the one they show now(which they get from ABC Queensland)

Premier League matches are generally pre-NRL games, so they just get their earlier. SportsAustralia did that when they showed Reserve Grade.

Optus was an ARL friend and got them for free courtesy of Arko intervention. It was very political.

That decision is still not concrete. It will utilise a brisbane OBU or NQ based OBU.
& as you can tell by the ABC coverage, there is coverage & there is , well, coverage. half the amount of cameras, crew &related equipment & it then, still costs tens of thousands for 1 broadcast.
The decision for that broadcast is an Austar push & not a Foxtel or Optus push. Again, it is not concrete as Foxsports OB's are all done now by outside contractors. So until the price is right it wont happen.
Fox sports are spending no money on league ATM.
In fact, the active game, is not even replayed complete like the AFL is.
And another thing in regards to retro games.
A decade ago when channel 10 had the rights to rugby league they were at lane Cove.
They lost the rights & a few years later moved to Pyrmont.
At this point they rang the ARL & said come a get your content.
The ARL didn't & most of the video wnt into a furnace.
1 only masters of games. A few people bolted sown there & saved a heap but most apparently perished.
when was the last retro ch10 game you saw? or even midweek cup?
Disgraceful act by a carelessly & amateurishly run ARL.

edit.
& in regards to getting there earlier for lower game broadcast, that is possible. However, atm, it is a sameday in & out for 1 broadcast to be ready for a 2.30 kick off.
& then it cuts it fine.
To do lowers, it would mean a previous day in next day out , theortically almost doubling costs.
