A morale boosting draw for New Zealand in the first cricket test against India in Ahmedabad.

Chasing an unlikely 370 for victory in their second innings, the Black Caps reached 272 for six, when play was called off.

Craig McMillan was unbeaten on 83 while a less than fully fit Nathan Astle was 51 not out.

Astle was batting at number eight because he was suffering from a stomach bug.

Captain Stephen Fleming says it was a fantastic effort from his team after staring down the barrel of defeat after three days.

New Zealand was in trouble from the outset with the home side making 500 for five declared in the first innings.

Fleming says fortunately his bowlers made the Indians work hard for those runs, and keeping the all-star Indian lineup to about thee runs an over for the whole game is some sort of achievement.

He says they even had a chance to win, but a couple of early wickets on day five meant they had to shut up shop.

The second test starts in Mohali on Thursday

and there you go,,, a great game with accolades going to both sides,, the indians for making a game of it and the kiwis for showing tenacity and guts.. great stuff.the true cricket fan got his moneys worth here...

There is no way watching New Zealand is better than watcing Australia.

I hate games that end in a draw, and NZ are very guilty of that. Them an most other countries in the world don't score their runs quick enough to give themselves achance for the win. That is why Australia is the best team to watch. Regardless of who they play.

Rain, is theonly thing that will hold Australia to a draw.
