ok- I am sure we can all agree that his comments were unwise and problematic. But what is the appropriate response?

I've seen talk of the ARU taking of measures beyond a censure.

I've seen Qantas talk about reviewing their sponsorship of the ARL (though no talk of them reviewing their partnership with Emirates).

I've seen a prominent NZ ex-politician proposing that he should be barred entry into the country.

Another former Wallaby, Drew Mitchell, said Folau was entitled to his opinion.

“The most disappointing thing I think in the last few weeks with other things that have happened outside of our sport is everyone has an opinion and people will attack those that don’t have the same opinion," Mitchell said. "We just have to appreciate this is Izzy’s opinion and he’s entitled to it, whether you like it or not. He’s as much entitled to his opinion as you are with yours.

    Pretty much.

And folk are entitled to criticise him for such an opinion.

What a dumb merkin though, surely he’d realise what reaction such comments from him would provoke.

    Yep, for sure.

I'm not sure (genuinely) that this then extends to-

    -his employer penalising him
    -his employer's sponsor penalising them
    -another nation refusing him entry

All of those seem way more problematic to me somehow than Folau's social media activity.

    Why not?

They are entitled to their opinion as to what he said and to take action accordingly.

Sponsors act in such ways regularly when it comes to brand image. Not sure it’s really a freedom of speech issue there.

The free speech supporters disappear when it comes to saying anything about Anzac Day.

Why do people who don’t follow Izzy’s religion get angry about being told they are going against it? Just about every f**ker on earth is gong to hell based on the Mormon religion after all

Qantas supported gay marriage now is sponsoring someone who says they're going to hell.

I should imagine that contradicts Qantas's values.

Conveniently, they don't seem to have a problem with Emirates though.

Not to rehash the gay marriage debate, but I do have a bit of an issue with organisations taking positions on contentious public issues. Surely, not everybody who is employed by Qantas voted 'yes'. And it's a bit weird for them to threaten to withdraw their sponsorship from the ARU just because one employee (admittedly, a very prominent one) differs from their stated position on a public issue.

It's definitely true that Qantas are entitled to sponsor or discontinue sponsorship however they see fit.

I know you like to use the extremes of the right and paint us all with the same brush, but this tactic is laughable and is obvious trolling.

He's parroting what he has been taught

    Hence the problem with religion

Don't teach kids to condemn other people based on something that has no impact on anybody else.
