Gold Coast Titans NRL fans throw support behind coach Neil Henry after Jarryd Hayne saga

Connor O’Brien, Gold Coast Bulletin
August 19, 2017 12:00am

“I WOULD like to see King stay and keep building because I have faith in that.”

In one sentence, foundation Titans member Lee Dungey summed up the consensus of many Gold Coast rugby league fans standing by coach Neil Henry.

King Henry’s future has come under intense scrutiny in the face of a standoff with marquee man Jarryd Hayne, with widespread word that Thursday night’s loss to Parramatta was the veteran mentor’s last game at the helm.

But a number of diehard Titans supporters have pleaded with the club to keep faith in the coach.

Many are disillusioned with Hayne’s efforts. Of the 1300 responses to a Bulletin poll this week, 84 per cent felt Hayne was the problem. Only 10 per cent wanted Henry axed.

“I am a fan of Henry and I think he is a good coach,” Dungey said.

“He obviously did something at the (North Queensland) Cowboys to get them going to where they are today. He might have some flaws but everybody has flaws.”

Dungey said he was originally “on the fence” about Hayne joining the club last year, but has since fallen off it, underwhelmed by what the $1.2 million man has produced compared to other National Rugby League marquee players such as Cameron Smith.

“He’s only running around earning $400,000 I would have thought, not $1.2 million,” Dungey said of Hayne, adding he would like the code-hopping star to stay but only if he bought into the team’s culture like crowd favourite Konrad Hurrell.

Fellow fan Luke Kruusmaa said punting Henry would be the wrong call and challenged players — in particular Hayne — to step up.

Kruusmaa said the club could lose fans if it did not retain halves Tyrone Roberts and Ash Taylor.

“(Roberts) puts his body on the line every week and is half the size of Hayne and he is probably on a (fraction) of the wage Hayne is on.”

Another inaugural Titans fan, Nathan Neary, heaped praise on Henry’s work in building the team’s roster, but feared the present situation may have descended to an unrepairable level.

“All things being equal I think Hayne should go first but now that there is so much tension in the air, Neil has to go as well, which is a shame,” he said.

Harley Sayers labelled the Hayne-Henry crisis “upsetting” while Denny Griggs has been “thoroughly disappointed” in both men for not being able to sort their differences in private. He believes either both should stay or both should be shown the door.

“For a club to prioritise one or the other sends a message that under the right pressure the board will cave to demands,” Griggs said.

Not sure if this has been posted already somewhere, but some interesting insights from the sponsor

Titans major sponsors TripADeal say Jarryd Hayne a scapegoat for coaching problems

ONE of the Gold Coast Titans’ most influential sponsors says Jarryd Hayne has been made a scapegoat in the turmoil surrounding coach Neil Henry.

In a scathing attack on the club and National Rugby League, TripADeal founders Norm Black and Richard Johnston revealed:

* Several players are dissatisfied not only with Henry but other members of the coaching staff;

* The Titans’ coaching staff’s treatment of Hayne and other players was not proper and TripADeal’s relationship with the club had “taken a turn”;

* Apart from a pre-season fine being leaked to the media, he had never heard Hayne speak poorly of Henry;

* The NRL, as owners of the Titans, also bear responsibility for how the affair has played out;

* Henry was completely across Hayne being signed by the Titans.

As a major sponsor, TripADeal pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to the Titans, including a marquee player allowance that helped keep Kane Elgey at the club and about $400,000 to Hayne’s contract.

Managing director and co-founder of the Byron Bay-based company, Black said no one had emerged well from the messy saga.

“Regardless of what takes place with Jarryd Hayne, TripADeal’s commitment has always been with Gold Coast, with the Titans,” Black said.

“The Titans are much bigger than Jarryd Hayne but I’d be lying if I didn’t say there’s a fair bit of disappointment with the methods and how Jarryd has been treated.

“He is literally being used as a scapegoat for the whole performance of the team, the coaching staff, the whole thing.

“You can say the same thing for how it’s played out for Neil Henry. It’s probably totally unfair for Neil to be held in the world he’s been living in right now.

“What gets lost in all of this is Neil Henry, Jarryd Hayne and all those other guys in that rugby league team are people, they’re human beings and you just don’t treat human beings as commodities,” he said.

“Whether it’s the treatment of Jarryd Hayne, or the treatment of Kane Elgey or anyone else in that team … we would definitely review how the Gold Coast Titans had treated their (playing) employees.

“It certainly doesn’t fit with the ethos of our company. To see how it’s played out, it’s been poor to say the least.

“Graham (CEO Graham Annesley) can do the best he can, Rebecca (chair Rebecca Frizelle) can do the best she can but there’s the NRL at the top of the tree pulling those levels to how far they can make a decision and how they can deal with things.”

Black said Annesley had kept communication channels open through the saga and TripADeal did not expect a voice in the boardroom. However, the situation had affected the company’s relationship with the club.

“We’re not going to be holding a gun to their head saying Jarryd stays or we go,” he said.

“It’s more how this whole thing has played out. What has been a wonderful association to date, has certainly taken a turn.

“Don’t for a minute think that sour taste is related to the losses, because rugby league has good and bad times.

“But I have a pretty huge issue with the welfare and how employees are treated in a workplace and if Jarryd Hayne was in any other workplace right now, there would be pretty serious ramifications for his employer.

“(To insinuate) that Jarryd is somehow orchestrating the fall of Neil, I just know that is not true.

“I know there’s a number of dissatisfied players in that team. There’s a fair bit of dissatisfaction with Neil, his supporting staff and some of the processes that have gone on there.

“Fundamentally there’s something not working there.”

Nah stfu mate, it's all Hayne's fault. He single handedly made everyone at the club injured or shit.

With all these Titans identities now coming out and having their say, I reckon Hayne might be sooking and trying to not have to play under Henry again?

Odds on he sits out the final two games of the season (can't see him rushing to get through rehab), and then chucks a tanty if all his press statements/leaks don't make Titans sack the coach who just wanted him to put in like every other player...

Jarryd Hayne brushed fellow Gold Coast players in favour of spending time with old mates
Jarryd Hayne did nothing to enhance his reputation as a team player when the Titans star spent more time with his former teammates than his current ones last week.

Hayne, ruled out of Thursday's Eels-Titans clash through injury, decided to brush the game altogether rather than turn up at ANZ Stadium to support his fellow Gold Coast players.

It's not like the cross-code star wasn't in Sydney. He found time to hang out with former Parramatta teammate Corey Norman on the eve of the match. The pair engaged in some lively banter, captured on a vlog produced by friend and fellow footballer Isaac John, while having dinner at Mama & Papas at Church Street, Parramatta.

Hayne ribbed Norman about the fact that he has yet to play State of Origin football, but the Eels playmaker had ammunition of his own, given Hayne's much-publicised dramas on the Gold Coast.

"I hope the Titans kept the receipt," Norman quipped.

It's unlikely Gold Coast coach Neil Henry would have seen the funny side. Regular reader(s) of this column knew their relationship was going to end in tears. We revealed in March that Hayne was fined for his lackadaisical approach to training last summer. Hayne's response was telling: he took to Twitter to declare "Loose lips sink ships!" And effectively threw Henry under the bus by following up with: "Was meant to be cap sess [captain's session]. Captain said was ok 4me 2get treatment in syd! Coach found out and fined me. Media will milk it!!!"

The next month, our lead item said Hayne and Henry were feuding but, due to the lack of interest from rival clubs, they were destined to be stuck together on the holiday strip. We even revealed they were barely on speaking terms as early as April, yet the situation has been allowed to fester and, ultimately, rip the club apart.

Henry said Hayne had the "week off", but the fullback's failure show up to support the team is a bad look.

Henry will most likely go and, because the club can't afford to pay out his $1.2million deal, Hayne will stay. The saga has done irreparable damage to a club that was a media darling during a storied run to the finals 12 months ago. Things are likely to come to a head this week, possibly as soon as Monday.

Hayne's personal sponsor is sticking solid. TripADeal's Norm Black, also a Titans sponsor, said the firm would continue its association when Hayne's contract lapsed at the end of the year.

"We're doing more things with Jarryd next year, we're starting an NFL Super Bowl tour with him," Black said. "Our relationship with Jarryd is a longer-term one, we'll be looking at business opportunities such as re-engagement with the NFL."

Lol, who the f**k would want to do an NFL Super Bowl tour with Jarryd - he never stuck around in the sport long enough to even play in one...

And that was before the greedy prick trashed his brand and forever damaged his reputation... that TripADeal bloke is tripping!

MANAGER REQUIRED IF HAYNE LEAVES TITANS

JARRYD Hayne will be looking for a new agent as well as a new club if he is dumped by the Gold Coast at the end of the season.

His former manager, Wayne Beavis, is banned from negotiating with NRL clubs after handing in his accreditation in the aftermath of last year’s Eels salary cap scandal. The NSW Police fraud squad became involved in the investigation and raided Beavis’ Woollahra home and the offices of other managers. No charges were laid.

Still, the NRL said it would conduct its own examination of player agents.

Beavis announced soon after that he was retiring as a player manager, meaning he would fall outside the scope of the investigation. But with Hayne set for another big payout or new contract, Beavis is suddenly being described again as Hayne’s manager in media reports.

The NRL is reminding clubs they are not permitted to deal with non-accredited agents on contracts. Any club dealing with Beavis on anything to do with a contract risks being in breach.

Beavis told me he was acting for Hayne only as a consultant and was not negotiating contracts on his behalf.

Lol... more pot, kettle, black from one who hardly ever stops posting about me, since the "discovery" that I'd used a second log in (alt) here (like many others).

But keep on posting in the Hayne thread, to complaint about... people posting/reading about Hayne!

So back on topic... about Jarryd, rather than commentary about forum members think of what other forum members post about Jarryd.

Titans must act on Neil Henry-Jarryd Hayne dispute as club takes on water
Phil Lutton

The Gold Coast Titans have little choice but to bring to a head the impasse between Jarryd Hayne, Neil Henry and the club's board as they prepare to host their final game of the year on Saturday afternoon against the Bulldogs.

It could well be a battle between the two most talked-about coaches in rugby league, assuming Henry holds onto his post long enough to square off with Des Hasler at Robina.

The full board met last week to attempt to sort out the differences between star recruit Hayne and Henry, who has had to undergo drug scandals and contract backflips during his dramatic tenure at the Titans.

It soon became clear that Henry was the favourite to be given his marching orders, although Hayne could yet follow after serving the first of a two-year deal worth $2.4 million.

Club officials have already crunched the numbers regarding a severance package for Henry with powerbrokers at the NRL, which is going to be the one footing the bill if the coach is told to pack his bags before his $400,000 per season contract concludes.

But Fairfax Media understands Hayne's price was also up for discussion, a move that would cost the game some $1.2 million and potentially see the NSW back campaign for another club on the NRL's payroll.

Most expect Henry to go and Hayne to survive, while chief executive Graham Annesley and club chair Rebecca Frizelle had suggested this week as the deadline for any call as they fully investigated their options.

The pair said they would not rush to make decisions that would have an impact on the lives and careers of those at the centre of dispute. But the fact the board was leaking like a rusty ship an hour later did little to convince observers that the pair's fate lay in the hands of seasoned professionals.

Since reports emerged that Henry had "lost" the playing group, in recent days they seem to have found him. Hooker Nathan Peats has emerged as a vocal supporter, while captain Ryan James was another that was happy to back a coach that took them to the finals in 2016.

But a nightmare losing streak, in which the Titans have failed to be remotely competitive, has been as dangerous to Henry's future as any internal strife. The Titans have also been warned by Wayne Bennett not to take a solitary step down the path towards player power.

What has become abundantly clear is that ongoing delays and a lack of leadership from the board will continue to do untold damage not only to Henry or Hayne but the Titans themselves, who are bleeding fans and sponsors as they reel from the backlash.
