Leichhardt council to allow AFL to be played at Birchgrove Oval

Took 87 years to erect a plaque there.

The NSWRL never gave a flying f**k about that ground, or any ground really.

But as soon as the AFL goes near it, "Oh no, they can f**k off, its our heritage"

NRL turned its back on heritage and history years ago.

If they cared for the heritage of grounds, they'd fund a massive upgrade for Leichhardt oval. They would have paid in full, for upgrades to Kogarah, Brookvale, Belmore, Redfern and Parramatta over the years.

But they don't give a shit and they never will.

They want all teams playing in concrete jungles, pack more of us in so they can rape our wallets.

Only fans care about loyalty, heritage and history, no-one else does.

Some good points made there madunit.

RL admin has been pissweak since 1908.

You completely miss the point. This is about one sports heartland against the other wtf does Perth have to do with it?

The assumption that other codes sook as much as we do. Not that most of us do really but the media are on the "AFL taking over sydney" bandwagon so love these nothing stories. If AFL was taking over the oval from RL I agree we should outraged but as it is only soccer that may be affected who gives a frick? And as clearly shown in the plaque photo it isn't like the code gives a frick about the heritage of this oval.

What this and countless stories like it do do is create the perception in the 90% of the popualtion in Sydney who don't follow RL that AFL is on the March and growing to be the dominant national code.

Balmain DFC has over 2,000 registered players. Most of whom live in the lga. If the council think they can dick the district's largest sporting club so that 44 Victorians in singlets, exiled ira members and village idiots who were too unco to play soccer and too pissweak to play league, they will be turfed. The council is beyond contempt and panders to minorities and spastics. Dwarf throwing isn't represented in the lga either though the afl would object on account dwarf throwing would attract a bigger crowd

So what is going to happen to the soccer clubs games?

The lga is 7 grounds short for soccer at the moment according to the club. When configured for soccer there are 4 games of aa/o35s every Saturday. In addition ig girls or youths are rained out (they play Sundays) then they play their catchup games there before 1 on Saturdays. The council has mentioned the building of 2 mini fields on balmain rd within Callan park near the ambulance house for those that know it as well as a field on glover st within Callan park across the rd from leichhardt no 2 but it is a goat track with grass like the rough at st Andrews. Even if that were to happen there are 2 balmain teams displaced every Saturday because the balmain rd fields are only for 6s and 7s.

The old Apia play some home games at rosedale pk, Blair park among others which are miles out of the district. If council give balmain leichhardt 2 then that further displaces Apia.

Who knows with these clowns they probably want sports played in more than 3 states to cease, all players to take up 4 unit basket weaving, smoke the peace pipe and guide a refugee boat or 10 in. They're spastics

I love this quote.

What sort of Mental breakdown would Elias/NRL have if the best players in the world Copper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater all turned around and said screw league I would love to dominate AFL

I agree, they would all dominate AFL.

Another quality quote from that thread.

It's not the AFLs fault that League is an insular two state sport with no interest in growing beyond its boundaries.

If League is under threat, it's their own bloody fault.

Um....

Your point aside, which seems to be valid yet extremely harsh.

Where the f**k would the NRL get the money for those upgrades? Your talking circa 80 to 100M??

Balmain JRL have been trying their best.

It was home to Balmain PCYC JRL....these days they have very few grades 4, 6 not many.
Balmain Jnrs nominate a district club each w/end for them to have their home games their, supply volenteers for canteen, 1st aid, ground mgrs etc....just to keep JRL being played there.

I second this quote.

It's part of AFL propaganda to erect a few posts here and there, for symbolism more than anything else. They are very clever with this sort of thing.

Last year we did a weekend house swap with friends who live in Balmain. We took a walk, ended up at Birchgrove Oval. I didn't see the plaque but I knew the significance of the place. Took photos of my boys standing in front of the footy posts with the bridge in the background. That as others have said is what the merkins want.
