Leichhardt council to allow AFL to be played at Birchgrove Oval

Looking at the facts

So in the municipal council area there is Balmain PCYC, Leichhardt Wanderers and Holy Cross and Leichhardt Juniors at junior level in divisions from under 6 to under 12. Thats with 2 divisions at each age group according to sportingpulse. Wanderers (up to A/Reserve) and Holy cross (up to u/17) then field in the inner city combined comps.

Not sure how amny registered players that amounts to?

As for afl, they have that balmain in the sydney premier afl comp. I cant find any info on juniors in the leichhardt area for afl closest are drummoyne and glebe that i can see, have they just quoted auskick for that 1600 haha.

So begs the question whos arm have they tisted to even make this an issue at all as clearly the numbers dont stack up in their favour. I can see why the soccer clubs would be very angry this was even being considered

Many people tend to miss the point here IMO.

This is about birchgrove being the first ground to host a first grade rugby league game. Nothing more nothing less.

It's historically important to our game and therefore allowing our major competitor to play there is a slap in the face.


Yes , the admin of rugby league has neglected birchgrove oval , the place should be a shrine to our history.

But the history of the game doesn't belong to the admin , it belongs to the fans , players and officials.

Yeh pretty sure so....I know the larger clubs do...they do it so it stays rugby league.
Balmain PCYC used it as their home ground...they are growing again slowly I think but have recently only fielded as many as three or four younger grades as a club ( a quik look shows 9 teams in 2012) ....not enough to convince council to keep it theirs, so Balmain stepped in and every club hosts games there pretty much each weekend

This will probably look crap...but its the seasons fixtures for Birchy....the link only takes you to the main page...as we can see, lots of games all year.

URGENT: BALMAIN SPORTING FIELDS CRISIS

Thank you to those who expressed your views to Councillors.

As a result of this Council has agreed to defer consideration of the EOI report for one month.

During this period they will seek information from each code on the number of players who are resident in the municipality. This will ensure locals will get priority in the distribution of training grounds.

There is still much discussion to be held with the Council regarding the distribution of training hours to ensure that juniors are catered for and the current shortfall in grounds with lights is addressed within the overall capacity.

We also need to have discussions in the Club on the Birchgrove V Glover St options.

It is likely that some members will receive an email from Councillors disputing our view on the proposed allocations. We disagree that the hours the Club was allocated at Leichhardt 2 & 3 in 2012 should be excluded from Council's calculations and will continue to press this point and others in the next round of discussions.

Council will hold a meeting with sporting clubs shortly and Balmain DFC will put in an additional submission. Council will then make a decision on allocations at the July 25th Council meeting.

We expect members will need to send a further email to Councillors ahead of that meeting.

I will keep you informed on where we are up to.

The Herald has obtained a copy of a report into sporting grounds in the Leichhardt district, which recommends that council ''relocate Balmain & District FC current (soccer) activities from Birchgrove Oval at the conclusion of the 2012 winter sporting season and permit NSW/ACT AFL and the Balmain Dockers to promote a new sporting activity (within the local government area) at Birchgrove Oval which will facilitate junior AFL competition within the LGA''.
