The refs are simply conductors, not authoritarians of the game's laws.

They tell players how to play and when. To top it off, players are called by thier first names/nickname.

As a result the refs simply become WWF/WWE refs, part of the spectacle

Watch an old game. The refs called players by thier numbers and didn't tell players they are offside etc, they penalised them.

And if a player played the ball not on the mark..Penalty. Now is just do it again.

I don't care how many penalties are blown, as long as the refs uphold the rules and are consistent.

Bring back the option to biff thus eliminate the niggle. However, you play dirty you run the risk of sanction. No rules/laws are ever just black and which like this mandatory 10 min bin for a punch.

NRL lack total common sense and are always after the easy option. The easy option is not always the best or cheapest (ie bunker and two refs etc)
