Reserve Jacob Saifiti and hooker Danny Levi must pass concussion protocols and forward Mitch Barnett and pivot Brock Lamb picked up niggles in the Penrith rout.

The Knights mentor said he would welcome back fullback Brendan Elliot for Saturday's clash at Cronulla.

Newcastle's loss marked the 22nd straight game the Knights had conceded 20 or more points.

Jesus... 22 games, is that in record territory? I know there used to be some pretty bad teams in the 90's and earlier, but there were OTHER bad teams for them to play against, too.

If we put in and have a bit of a dig and keep the scoreline modest.lose by 12 would be a fair result.maybe just maybe jack bird will come and join us next year.if it only another $50,000 to beat parras offer just pay the man the coin.

Why would Bird come to the Knights for 50k a year more than a good teams offer?
He wouldn't, of course. We need to pay way, way overs to entice someone good here. Overs to a point where I'm debating its worth as an immediate strategy.

We need to pick up a few more Buhrers and Kostjaysns yet.

Like other heartland clubs, what on-field success Newcastle has had has come mostly from local juniors who've come through the ranks. That is where the future lies, IMHO.

You can't just throw a bunch of promising 18-20 year olds out there and hope they develop. Just look at our current situation as proof of that. We'll be waiting 30 years before those stars all align again. Really, what on-field success Newcastle has had didn't come from local juniors, it came from Joey and a solid supporting cast of which many weren't actually locals - but they were adopted and treated as such because they were winners. Joey was a once in a lifetime talent that hid so many cracks in this club that it's mind-boggling.

There will be locals come through and we have to make sure they stay here, guys like the Saifiti's, Levi, Sione... but they need help, you can't just hang the whole club on whatever crop is coming through - they need guidance on and off field. At the moment we sit here micro-analysing every move these young kids make in every game, and it's pretty unfair on them to be honest, because none of them should be in a position to have to carry this team. I feel for Ponga coming here in a similar capacity if our recruitment fails to put some seasoned quality around him.

Our best years came when we had ODavis, MacDougall, Kennedy, Glanville, Parsons, Butterfield, Grief, etc filling out the team. Guys with experience and grit leading the young local talent

We didn't make an offer as the asking price was more than we were prepared to pay
One of our dumber passes in recent memory. Pretty sure you and I both were keen on him... how our administration weren't is a little perplexing. Canberra weren't ditching him because he's a bad player.

He wanted 600k, we didn't think he was worth that. Every starting prop in the top 1/3 of the talent pool is worth that these days...
