the bigwigs at the NRL have strange memories..

you can be forgotten if you've been in the comp for 50 years..

you can be forgotten if you've won a premiership in the last 2 seasons..

you can be forgotten if you've had the only widespread ASADA ban in rugby league history...

but you piss in your own mouth just once....

It’s just a misunderstood question, calm down folks.

“What team plays out of the Sutherland Shire?” Gus, then gave three options, all with the name “Cronulla” first part. Now yes, most people would have picked up, oh we’re talking about the NRL. But I think Beattie had got caught up on the Sutherland Shire bit and thought Gus was talking state league or local suburban leagues in Sydney. After all, the Cronulla-Sutherland double barrel name has kind of fallen out of usage in the 20 years since Super League, so it’s not an automatic connection for non Sydney siders.

If you don’t buy that, just consider that Beattie has been on the Commission for more than six months. During that time he’s sat in round table meetings where all eight Commissioners, representatives of all sixteen clubs and representatives of the two states have been present (including twice in the last three weeks, one of those just hours before this interview). To suggest he doesn’t know who the Cronulla Sharks are is just ridiculous.

Leigh.

Yep. Thats all.

It’s not the comparative merits of the incidents themselves, it’s the shear number of incidents in Carney’s case. He’s the original repeat offender. Why should the game take the risk on him yet again after being burned by him multiple times? As Gus said, perhaps he’s grown up. But he still has a bigger hurdle than either the other two to justify his return.

Leigh.

Why aren’t they writing about NRL expansion? Don’t they know this isn’t a story!
If the NY Times puts a rugby league story in the rugby section of its sports pages I wouldn't expect them to cover the real issues.

He might not know much about the nrl but he knows what a degustation is.

Which is far more important when discussing changes to the business.

Any reasonable person would suggest he heard Sutherland and then blanked on the rest of the question.

However, lets say he doesn't know who the Sharks are as some Stewart Littles' are suggesting.

Doesn't that speak more to the lack of awareness the NRL has on politicians, businessmen and quite frankly the MAJORITY of the Australian population.

No wonder we can't look past our own noses for decent people to take the game forward and end up perpetually complaining about the same shit year after year (i.e. crowds, expansion, clubs going broke, player indiscretions).

Any reasonable person would be thinking ...why in f**ks name does he not know the answer?
Especially considering Gould even told him the answer.

What else is he clueless about in regards to the NRL?

Who hires these f**king dopes?

The fact he got it wrong is almost expected, the scarey part is he is the bloke they’ve hired to be in charge.

Surely a good knowledge of the history of the game and even an actual interest in the game would be a prerequisite for the top job.

I don’t buy this he misheard the question bullshit.
He was clueless and admitted it.

This is no different to politics.

Just like putting some clown in as health minister who doesn't know the difference between a tibia and smegma.

Seeing how well the 'jobs for the boys' approach has worked in the past maybe it is better if he doesn't know shit about the game..
