The proof is now in the pudding.

Fox NRL the big winner with record ratings after one of the craziest weeks in rugby league history

JASON Taylor, take a bow. You too Ivan Cleary, Mitch Moses, James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

And don’t forget Cooper Cronk for quitting Melbourne. Or Jack Bird courting a move from Cronulla to Brisbane.

You all deserve special mention for what you have done for the game.

After one of the craziest weeks in rugby league’s history, here’s proof the fans can’t get enough of the constant speculation and controversy.

Sport’s answer to reality television is now officially must-see TV.

Many would think the off-field dramas of the past week that included Taylor’s sacking and constant speculation over some of the game’s biggest stars switching clubs would be a turn off.

But in actual fact it has ultimately resulted in record Pay TV ratings.

For the first time ever Fox Sports’ new dedicated NRL channel has out-rated the extremely popular AFL channel, Fox Footy, to be the most watched channel on subscription TV for the week.

Not only that, Ivan Cleary’s first game as coach of the Wests Tigers was also the highest rating subscription television program on Saturday.

The Tigers shock win over Johnathan Thurston’s Cowboys in Townsville registered an average audience of 324,000, up 11 per cent on the season’s average timeslot.

It was also the second highest rating game for the year to date, and the second highest overall subscription program this year.

No doubt, NRL boss Todd Greenberg’s head would have been spinning at some of the headlines and stories we’ve seen over the past week.

But once again, the game has proved what we already knew, that rugby league is the greatest game of all because we are all so passionate about it.

“The figures confirm what we all know… there is more interest in rugby league than ever before,’ Greenberg said.

“When you have some of the biggest names in the game deciding their futures there is going to be enormous interest from fans.

“When you combine that with the closeness of the competition it’s no surprise interest is reaching new highs.

“As we saw at the weekend, the teams at the bottom of the NRL ladder can beat the top teams on their day.

“And that means, after six rounds, that all 16 teams are a realistic chance of being in hunt for the finals.

“So we would hope that the level of interest will continue to rise as the season progresses.”

And while we still have no clear idea who will be playing where next season, it makes no difference to the overwhelming interest in the game.

“You’ve gotta love rugby league,” said Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany, “and its eight games a week of unscripted drama. “Spectacular action.

“It’s little wonder the fans are so passionate, setting record audience numbers on our new Fox League 502 channel.

“Even though we’re only just coming into round seven of the competition it already feels like a vintage year.”

Sounds like good news. What does this really mean though? Nrl channel outrated the Afl channel? Total viewers to the channels or more people watching the games? The Nrl only has 8 games as well.

Cant believe I missed Wellington vs Perth, must have been a cracker.

The all kiwi matches in the Yawnion out rate the Australian 'super' games. Give it another year and Darts will beat them.

its great that we can get 330k viewers on 502 at 7.30pm on sat... but everyone knows its an exclusive match..

like meaning its exclusive to the 32% of houses that have fox...

if the game was simulcast on Ch9 at the same time.... we would get at least 750k viewers...

not sure why we applaud the fact we stop 440k people watching the game..

NRL has 5 exclusive pay games a week... id say the afl only has 2-3 pay only games..

even if say GWS is on a pay only game, at 1.40 pm on a sat, they will make sure that is also simulcast to sydney on 7 mate..

it sucks to think that someone like ch 9 / win townsville cant show a cowboys game. to the 68% of town who doesnt have fox..

I would be happy for Ch 9 to swap the Thursday night game for Saturday night and let Foxtel bring back Monday Night Football. I know Fox like having the Super Saturday to themselves, but with all games now being simulcast this shouldn't be such an issue now.

In fairness, that was a very exciting game to watch for the A League.

Where are Channel 9s ratings in all this?

All AFL games are on Fox. Asked a mate about this.
Things to remember when comparing NRL and AFL TV ratings (a completely pointless exercise generally imo).
1. All AFL games are on Fox, but some of them are on 2 different channels in the same time-slot. So if it looks like NRL has beaten AFL easily in a time-slot, just check how many AFL games were being shown.
2. Most AFL games are on FTA, usually only 2 or sometimes 3 are not shown, so there are not many Fox exclusives.
3. Seven splits AFL broadcasts up, so the Sat afternoon time-slot, or Sunday time-slot for instance will have different games in different cities. When comparing FTA ratings, was the AFL game shown nationally? (most are not).

Friday night is the best comparison, as AFL only has the 1 game, so neither the Fox, or the FTA ratings are being split. Direct comparisons at other times are a bit risky, to just plain pointless.

Edit: Actually, with new deal, I think Fox gets more exclusives than it used to, but still less than NRL.
Example of Fox, Sunday, NRL, Tigers Bulldogs got 247k on Fox League. AFL, Hawks Eagles got 219 on Fox Footy, but Saints Cats got 187k on Fox Sports which to a large extent overlapped the other game.

How do you compare? NRL had a higher rated game, and a much higher average (247 v 203), but there were more people watching AFL than NRL (247 v 406). But that there was more would be due to there being 4 sets of supporters with their team being shown as opposed to 2. However, the lower total for the most popular AFL game would be partly due to neutrals being split between 2 games.

What doe it all mean? No idea.

AfL has 9 games per week
NRL has 8

The afl fans rant about how they got more $$$$ yet then complain that games overlap .not RLs fault you can't work out your scheduling .
But then there's the added bonus for afl of FTA games into the home markets .
