Prepare for a spike in dumping and killing of greyhounds. The pounds will fill right up.

Apparently they already kill half of all the dogs bred for racing. Even a one off spike due to the ban is going to result in less dead dogs overall within 2-3 years.

It's sad but the greyhound industry has done this to itself.

Certainly a surprise and a good one at that.

Is it banned in other states or territories ?

I was a bit shocked by this but there doesn't seem any way to reform it and I guess if they're serious about stopping cruelty this is the only solution. You could probably make the same case to ban horse racing but I can't see that ever happening. Plenty of slow horses end up in abbottoirs.

    I like caravans more ;)

Not saying it is a bad decision. Seems like the baiting and abuse of the dogs was rife.

Just a shame for the owners who probably did the right thing by the dogs.

Next up an investigation into dodgy activity at the fish markets.

Can't have the stink lowering property values of the apartments that are surely about to go up on Wentworth Park.

    Surprising coming from Baird.

If anything, I'd thought the Libs would be pro-gambling as it's a form of societal control.

    First Harold Park, next Wenty.

I understand why they've gone ahead with the ban, cruelty was rampant in the industry, but it's going to leave a huge hole in a lot of communities.

    Baird is a merkin.

Thousands of dead dogs coming up, thousands of jobs gone and some of the poorest people in the state to be most heavily impacted.

It's little different to horse racing in terms of the destruction of animals not fit to race and the dogs are not whipped to run. But horse racing is the play thing of the rich and powerful so it will always be safe.

The number of owners and trainers who mistreat dogs or destroy the of they fail or use live baits would be relatively low.

If a few dodgy people equate to the removal of a whole public or social entity I'd suggest the corruption in the NSW govt in recent years means it should be wound up.

The greyhound industry has been given many many warnings to clean itself up. This has been coming for more than a decade.
They have been injecting dogs with ice before races, there have been more positive drug tests for dogs over the last 2 years than there have ever been before.

I notice you didn't have the same thoughts (a few bad apples spoil it for the majority) with the Trade Union Royal Commission or the ABCC, not surprising. I have no sympathy for the dog racing industry in any way shape or form.

Yeah, just a few bad apples, where's your support of such a statement? The industry has widespread issues, and according to the Baird government is beyond redemption.

Fact is these shit c**ts have had ample warning and opportunity to deal with a " a few bad apples ", but hasn't, because as has been well reported, it's not just a few bad apples that are to blame here, it's the practices of the entire industry, it's a clusterf**k, and always has been

I think they'll have problems turning Wenty park into apartments. Even as a dog track it's a very open, public sort of space as it's got open parkland on two sides. Hopefully it gets repurposed as a club level footy/cricket/whatever ground, with the grandstand and facilities to be used for functions etc. could probably make quite a good concert venue too.
Some of the other tracks like Potts Hill or Dapto will doubtlessly get turned into commercial developments though.
