NSWRL Junior Reps 2009

I've heard that there is a possibility that the NSWRL will split the Junior Rep teams into two divisions in 2009.

I'm not too sure exactly how they would work out who would be in each division but i'd imagine it could be something like:

Division 1:
Canberra
Canterbury
Illawarra
Newcastle
Newtown/Sydney City
Parramatta
Penrith
South Sydney
Gold Coast

Division 2:
Balmain
Central Coast
Cronulla
Manly
North Sydney
St George
Western Suburbs
Western Sydney
South West Sydney

I've heard that if it is used there will be a promotion and relegation system (two promoted and two relegated).

The top 16 teams will then enter a round of 16 competition. This would comprise the top 7 teams from Division 1, the top 5 from Division 2 and the top 4 from Queensland (who are bringing in their own Under-18s and Under-16s competitions.

I understand that this system is under review after some clubs objected to the semis format. The administrators are looking at it again. Watch this space.

Titans back to grass roots

THE battle for sport's breeding grounds in south-east Queensland intensified yesterday when the Gold Coast Titans announced it would enter a team in next year's Harold Matthews competition.

Rugby league is in a fight against the AFL to win the hearts of young sportsmen on the popular tourist strip. But Titans managing director Michael Searle said the presence of a Titans team in the NSW-based Harold Matthews competition would reinforce the code at grass-roots level.

"The fact our local under-16 players can wear the Titans jersey and play against the likes of the Parramatta Eels, Bulldogs, Manly and all of the other elite NRL clubs is a massive bonus to our boys," he said. "It also offers us a great way of ensuring our players can stay on the Gold Coast and still compete in an elite competition week-in and week-out."

Titans head coach John Cartwright said the move went towards the club's goal of having half of its NRL squad made up of local juniors within five years.

As well as the Titans coming into Harold Matthews I have heard that the Melbourne Storm will be entering SG Ball. The Storm will still have a feeder relationship with the Central Coast.

I think it's fantastic news for Melbourne juniors that they are entering SG Ball. It will be great to see how their local juniors go in the competition and it gives them a chance to prove themselves so they can step up into Melbourne's Under-20s.

I believe they will follow South West Sydney Academy of Sport's Harold Matthews team around. That means they will play in Tier B of the competition's new format. It's a great opportunity for the Melbourne kids.

That would make sense. Melbourne players will be at a bit of a disadvantage without Harold Matthews experiance, however i'm sure they will still produce some talent such as Canberra's star SG Ball centre Drury Low.

I just hope they do change the system, even with some tweaking. Perhaps the Division 1 clubs are worried about missing the finals series.

The Qld section will be divided into two groups. With the top two clubs from each group progressing to the finals.

Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton, Wide Bay and Northern Territory to be in a Nth Qld pool.

A 10-team South East Qld comp will be mainly made up of Qld Cup clubs.

I'm hearing the two division idea has been dumped.

I'd like to see it stay even with some tweaking. Too many lop-sided scores between the strong clubs and the others in my opinion.

Having 2 tiers would have made it very competitive every week and also provide tier B teams with the opportunity to contest a semi series with the tier A teams from NSW and QLD.

You can throw the Northern Territory into the mix as well:
http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2008/12/04/20221_ntsport.html

"That style of logo served its purpose but this is a new era for rugby league in the Territory and our new logo is evidence of the new brand."

While there are elements of the new, Launt said it was imperative that the Titans nickname was retained for the teams lining-up in the national SG Ball (under-18) and Harold Matthews (under-16) competitions.

I believe it's going to be the same system as previous seasons but back to nine rounds, 18 teams, no Byes.

I'm getting feedback that the two tier system is virtually dead and buried. Indeed a draft draw is being circulated along the lines you suggest Rubber Toes. Shame.

Any news on the trials. I've heard that in Harold Matts the Dogs are what you would expect, big & mobile. Also, the Bears have a surprising amount of talent and should turn out a very handy squad. I wasn't at the trials, so does anybody agree with these comments.

I assume this is the latest draft out for comment. Is that your interpretation Yappy?

I assume it's the actual draw. Wasn't given to me on the basis of being a draft of anything.

Yes that is the actual draw...the only difference I can see, is that the Penrith and Canberra round 1 match is actually in Canberra not as CUA.

Sounds like they have renamed that greyhound track where you have to look into the sun all bloody game.
I hate that place.
