FIJI will join the 2019 New South Wales Cup competition following the confirmation of a corporate sponsor.

Former Fiji Bati captain Petero Civoniceva said the inclusion of the team would change the landscape of rugby league in Fiji and boost sports tourism.

At least 30 local players will have a chance to form the team that would compete against 11 teams from Australia and one from New Zealand.

"We now have a great opportunity for our youths and that has been the driving factor for the last three years," Civoniceva said.

Fiji National Rugby League CEO Timoci Naleba said players would no longer dream of playing in the NRL competition.

"They will actually be able to map out their careers," Naleba said.

"They now have a real opportunity to support themselves, their families and of course contribute to furthering economic opportunities for the nation."

The 30 players who will form the Fiji franchise will be contracted for the duration of the competition.

Fiji's high commissioner to Australia Yogesh Punja said the economic opportunities that Fiji would earn from the competition were many.

Mr Punja said the opportunity would be great for sports tourism.

He added this was something the Government had been pushing for.

Great news! Only faith I had in it happening was Petero's persistence.
This is huge for Fijian youths. A direct pathway to the big league.
The local competition will pickup now with this opportunity as the carrot.
An annual game vs PNG Hunters wouldn't be a bad idea either.

F@#k yes!

Now, Tonga & Samoa - I understand their populations are less than some Australian suburbs and therefore similar teams from them is unlikely, but what can we do to ensure that their best players have pathways on the islands?

Really excellent news and could be the final push needed to turn Fiji in to a genuine competitor for World Cups etc in the next 10 years.

Partner with New or existing NSW or QLD Cup teams to bring a home/s game there and set up annual trials for local players. Likewise with Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Hawaii etc if possible. Give every kid with talent in the Pacific their pathway tp the top.

Samoa and Tonga need touring Residents U16s, U18s, and Senior teams. Come to Australia and NZ and take on club junior reps and get those guys noticed.

Everyone wants the NRL and NSWRL to do this and that but the fact is the main drive has to come from the nations themselves. Whether it's France, Canada, Fiji, or Samoa - no one's gonna do the work for them.

What Australia can do is be accommodating to these opportunities. Accept games against tier 2 nations, don't hold up their best players in club footy, etc.

Massive news. Should see Fiji take some massive steps forward just like PNG have. Hopefully this helps both PNG and Fiji continue to close the gap with the big 3 making them more competitive than ever. Lets hope this leads to more home grown talent from Fiji and PNG making it to the NRL.
