By growing the game do you mean growing their profits and increasing their salaries? Lol its not growing the game very much imo and it looks like it won't even be in Auckland much longer and from what ive seen its becoming less popular. Most of the standout performances at the tournament came from younger players some even uncapped in the NRL. Similar to last year with Bevan French being the star. Forcing clubs to risk there best players when it might not even give them the best chance of winning is just complete stupidity from the NRL. Watching the cowboys stars didn't make the format any less boring for me.
Whether it's in Auckland or Brisbane (I'd hope we wouldn't waste it in Brisbane) doesn't change the fact that it needs at least some stars to sell tickets and TV ads, without which it could not be staged. The actual requirements are pretty f**king lenient, 1 top 5 player and 12 of your top 25, which Penrith wasn't even required to meet because they supposedly have 56 injured players a month out from round 1.
As for growing the game
- It kicks off the season in a Union town with a big, positive event where the only negativity comes from self-interested, short-sighted coaches and club officials.
- It gets people more interested and than any trial matches or dud All Stars games could possibly do
- It has been instrumental in the growth of the womens game via the Jillaroos and Ferns getting the opportunity to play in front of big crowds alongside NRL stars
- It brings new fans by highlighting the kind of freak plays and athletic brilliance that RL is known for, without getting too bogged down in defensive arm-wrestles and penalties.
