You don't go to clubs at all? You don't take advantage of cheap food, drinks and entertainment subsidised by pokies?
Thats;s actually a very good point considering I am going to Panthers for dinner tonight. Never said I wasn't a hypocrite lol. I will say Panthers have done a good job of broadening their revenue base, just wish as a game Rugby League would rely less on Pokies money when they have so much coming in from other sources.

Dont they have the same owners?

They are seperate companies with different boards producing different financial annual reports. Reality is if nrl pulled the panthers nrl license the leagues club would still operate, if the leagues club went under the nrl panthers would be screwed.

That is not actually 100% true, The football club board has 5 members and they are automatically appointed as director of the leagues club and they are allowed to appoint 2 other directors to the board based on expertise.

You got to wonder what souths do so differently to other sydney clubs to make it work.

In his own mind that man is never wrong.
He will probably blame the wind for yesterday's poor performance and the usual we have the youngest roster BS in the NRL for their inadequacies.

Pretty much this. He ignores that he is responsible for the young roster. We had more issues than the coach but easier to blame the coach

Technically they are 2 seperate boards that are run by the same directors. I would guess that's to legally protect each part of the club should the part fall over.

Surely this is a condemnation of the the fiscal model the NRL uses, whereby costs are borne by clubs, while the vast majority of income is made by the parent body, which then makes grants. What it means in effect is that Channel 9, News Ltd, and everyone else who makes money out of the game are all subsidised by poker machines. This is why Channel 9 a few years back mounted a campaign during its calls against the proposed increase in poker machine tax.

You got to wonder what souths do so differently to other sydney clubs to make it work.

Souths biggest problem pre-Crowe/Holmes a court was their leagues club. Souths Leagues Club was located right across the road from Redfern Oval. It quite literally went bust in 1972 and had to close its doors for some months. It only re-opened and resumed trading after a number of charity nights and events by big name supporters like Don Lane that saw them get enough money to continue operating. However from then on their revenue base at the leagues club was poor, and being where it was located it never earned much money.

The big money earning club was Souths Juniors which is located at Kensington. As that club was set up to run the junior league in the South Sydney district, that is where the bulk of its moneys flowed. They eventually came on board with the seniors but that was just before the start of the Super League war.

The Souths Board looked at upgrading the leagues club but realised due to its location, and the cost involved, it would not be viable. After the Crowe/Holmes a Court buyout, the board decided to close down the leagues club permanently.

When Holmes a Court decided to sell his part of the club, James Packer decided to buy it. That is partly as to how Souths wound up with casino sponsorship.
