Petero as Captain?

Fiji-born prop Petero Civoniceva could become the first non-Australian to lead the Kangaroos into a Test if given the job against France at Perpignan.

With Lockyer out and Steven Price also expected to be rested, the Brisbane Broncos prop could get the leadership role after 18 Tests.

Civoniceva has captained the Broncos well in the absence of Lockyer and Shane Webcke and he has always displayed great leadership qualities, especially in many fierce Origin battles against New South Wales.

Rooster Craig Fitzgibbon is another player who could lead Australia if he backs up from his man-of-the-match performance against Great Britain, although he may be another player Bennett elects to rest with the Kangaroos due to play Great Britain at Hull on Saturday week.

http://direct.ninemsn.com.au/scripts/accipiter/adclick/SITE=NEWS/AREA=SPORT/LOC=TOP/AAMSZ=MEDIUMSt George Illawarra five-eighth Trent Barrett is the most likely replacement for Lockyer this week.

Bennett has to decide whether to give Scott Prince another run at halfback inside Barrett or to have a look at a Craig Gower-Barrett combination with the Penrith halfback likely to get a chance to push his claims.

Bennett will give the six unused players - Gower and forwards Nathan Hindmarsh, Andrew Ryan, Trent Waterhouse and Ben Creagh plus winger Eric Grothe - their opportunity to push for selection against French a side sure to be well prepared by their Australian coach John Monie.

Mark O'Meley is likely to partner Civoniceva in the front row.

Grothe could get a start on Brent Tate's wing while Hindmarsh will start in the second row, looking to reclaim the Test jumper he lost because of the knee injury suffered on the eve of the NRL finals.

Willie Mason will be hoping for more playing time in France after showing some excellent signs against Great Britain.

Is Buderus out injured or something? Wouldn't the vice-captain become captain if he becomes injured?

Civ is on the field for around 40-50 minutes.. too much time off the field for me..

Will buderus actually play? He needs a rest.

Agreed he needs a rest, but he would be up there before anyone mentioned in the article.

I'd give it to Barrett or Prince, someone who's an 80 minute player and can lead the team.

I thought they were gonna go with

6. Barrett
7. Prince
9. Gower

I saw it on the news today. Can't remember which station it was on...

So Bedsy IS getting a break, thats good to hear..

He seems awfully flat footed, which could be contributed to him being targeted in defence by the forwards early on in the game

They're going to be stretched for numbers against France, considering the players who seem like they need or could do with a rest.

1. Minichiello
2. Grothe
3. Creagh?
4. ?
5. ?
6. Barrett
7. Prince
8. Civoneciva
9. Gower
10. O'Meley
11. Hindmarsh
12. Ryan
13. Waterhouse
14. Mason

15. ?
16. ?
17. Kennedy ?

I'm half suspecting Ian Hindmarsh or John Wilson etc to be popped into this side?

Petero is Australian. Yes he was born overseas, but is an Aussie.

Typical Bennett picking his Broncos,

Why the hell should Petero be named? Whats he done to deserve it?

The blokes I'd pick ahead of him would Price, Kennedy, Barrett, Gower, assuming Buderus isnt playing.

Civon is sh*t. I'm already cheering for France and if he captains Australia then I'll never cheer them again.

read in post one where it says "could"..it is in the 1st line.
2nd of all...please show me a quote of bennett saying anything at all about the captaincy.
You are acting like it is done and dusted.

It just surprises me that his name has been mentioned as a possible captain, given his recent form.

If Civoniceva was picked as captain why wouldnt Bennett has anything to do picking him?

If Petero Civoniceva gets picked as captain I'll eat my hat! There are 3 other players who would be far better options who captain their clubs on a regular basis (Barrett, Prince and Gower) plus if Ryan gets a run you can throw him in there as well.
