Bid receives K200,000 for juniors tour
The National, Monday June 25th, 2012
PRIME Minister Peter ONeill and the NGCBs Community Benefit Fund board handed 43 of the nations schoolboy rugby league youths an opportunity of a lifetime to take part in a tour of Australia to play against Australian junior teams.
ONeill recently presented a cheque for K200,000 to PNG NRL Bid CEO Brad Tassell to fund the tour.
The Bids ethos about not only developing good players but also future leaders of our country and linking that with the importance of education shows the impact rugby league can have on our nation and its youth, ONeill said.
Education is vital to PNG and using rugby league through the Bids national schoolboys programme, we can bring about social change to our youth.
This is exactly the type of programme we as a nation should be supporting and I wish them well and know they will do PNG proud.
The players are from the Bids development squads selected as part of the Bids Coca-Cola national all schools programme.
Tassell thanked ONeill and the NGCB Community Benefit Fund.
The Bid is extremely grateful for the opportunity the PNG Prime Minister and the NGCB have provided to these young men.
Through sponsorship from Coca-Cola, Ela Motors and funding through the NGCB we are determined the programme continues and grows each year.
The teams will play three games each two against Australian junior teams (Redcliffe & Wynumm Manly) and one against Brisbane-based PNG U16 and U18 teams.
The Brisbane Broncos players and coaches will play a big part in the tour with visits to the week-long camp in Brisbane to provide coaching tips to the tour coaches and assist in the training of the development squads.
