Publishing Player Salaries

I know this has been bought up in the media before but is a great topic of conversation with the NRL player movements for the 2019 season already open (that's another topic).

Publishing the NRL top 30 squad's salaries brings transparency to the salary cap and gives the fans a better understanding of where the clubs hard earned is being spent.

The NBA is one world class competition where salaries are published with little backlash from players, clubs, media or fans - not to mention also working under a salary cap.

What harm is there in publishing salaries? Management can be held accountable instead of the media and fans bashing them without true facts. The conversation amongst fans on the future of their squad grows. All players have a true value and can be measured against one another. The media would have a field day

What are the reasons against publishing salaries?

The main argument against it is Cam Smith doesnt want people to know how much he makes. That way the Save Cam Smith (Purple Ribbon day) Campaign stays on foot.

If publishing RL players' salaries makes a difference maybe we could graduate to publishing SWS official incomes . . . especially the residents of houses with bullet holes

Cam doesn't have to worry though as every other player in the NRL has their salary published as well. Everyone knows roughly what he makes, what harm is there publishing what he actually makes?

Its kind of like any workplace.. everyone knows roughly the salaries..

But who is going to vote to publish it..

The players have to agree and there is nothing in it for them..

I don't think it's necessary for it to be public. I do think it's necessary for the NRL to have enough power to view both player and club finances to make sure everything lines up and reduce the possibility of cheating.

I see no advantage, it’s just public voyerism to judge if you think someone is worth what they are getting paid.

Players should have to sign a salary declaration to the nrl though, then if salary cap cheating is found out players can be held accountable as well as the club.

Even if the salaries were published, audited by the club, the NRL, the ATO...

Most folks would still think, and be adamant, that the Roosters were lying.

And the Broncos still would be.

clubs should have to publish the cap value of players, It would hold the shit clubs more accountable.

Couldn't give a shit what players earn outside the cap so long as there is no rorting

Doesn't matter what an individual player is earning. But it would be good to see the combined value of third party deals for each club.

None of this will stop cheating however. You just don't declare it, like every other instance of cheating.

Fans would feel more like they know what is going on. It would create conversation and a more intelligent fan base which is a good thing. It is the same reason most sports (though not so much rugby league) are obsessed about statistics. League needs to get obsessed about statistics.

What about poor Bryce Cartwright?

His child support bills would go through the roof.
