R2K (Return to Kogarah) has responded cautiously to Kogarah Councils announcement that construction work will commence at OKI Jubilee Stadium in January 2008.
At Kogarah Councils meeting on 12 November 2007, Mayor Nick Katris stated that construction work will commence next January, irrespective of the extent of the Stage 3 works to be undertaken.
Stage 3 includes several components with the overall cost estimated to be $15 million, while the Club has received $7 million from the State Government and is therefore approximately $8 million short of being able to fully complete Stage 3.
Construction work was originally meant to commence in July 2007, but was reportedly delayed because the Dragons were in negotiations with the State Government for additional funding which would allow the Dragons to complete the full scope of planned works in a cost effective way.
R2K President Lachlan McLean questions the Dragons logic in picking a January commencement date.
We query why January 2008 is the commencement date and we hope that its not just an arbitrary date, particularly considering that Dragons CEO Peter Doust informed R2K that there was no sunset date on the original $7 million grant, he said.
R2K would like to see the commencement date delayed until July 2008 if it means that the additional time provides a greater chance to obtain the additional $8 million in funding.
The Mayors update followed a recent meeting held with St.George-Illawarra CEO Peter Doust after Councillor Mark Coure submitted a motion at the 19 October meeting calling for the Council to express its concern regarding the decision by the Dragons to abandon Kogarah for Homebush in 2008.
While overdue, R2K thanks Councillor Mark Coure for stirring Mayor Nick Katris into action on this important issue and it is only appropriate that Kogarah ratepayers and St.George supporters receive regular updates, Mr McLean said.
I think its important to have Councillors like Mark Coure that arent asleep at the wheel and Councillor Coure should be appointed to the OKI Jubilee Stadium Steering Committee to replace any Councillor that isnt showing a full commitment to the future of Kogarah Park and OKI Jubilee Stadium.
