The Rabbitohs National Youth Competition coach Alan Wilson has announced his captains for the 2008 season.
After impressive performances in pre-season training lock Jason Clark has been named captain and five-eighth Luke Capewell has been named vice-captain of the Rabbitohs NYC team in its inaugural season. Clark is a Rabbitohs junior with the Coogee Randwick Wombats who has represented NSW under 17s. While Capewell, who represented Australian Schoolboys and Queensland under 19s in 2006 and played his junior football with Charleville Juniors, has come down from Queensland to link with Souths.
Wilson said the duo had been very impressive during pre-season training.
“We made the decision to make all the players aware of the level of professionalism required to be successful in the NRL and in the process show them the disciplined approach that is required and Jason and Luke are great examples of that behaviour,” Wilson said.
“Jason is a very talented player and it is an encouraging sign for the club to have a Rabbitohs junior as the captain of our NYC team in its first year. Luke has had to make the transition from Brisbane to Sydney and has done that very well. He has grown in confidence and has been an integral part of the team and is a fine prospect for the future.”
Rabbitohs Director of Football Operations Shane Richardson welcomed Clark and Capewell to their leadership roles.
“Both Jason and Luke have been very impressive in their approach to training and have shown fine leadership skills in their time with the club so far,” he said.
“Both players only 18 and are a year younger which makes their efforts so far even more impressive. Jason is a very capable back rower who has worked his way through the Rabbitohs junior ranks. Luke has fitted in well here at Souths and we see him as one of the future faces of the club. The training efforts of both Luke and Jason in the pre-season have been outstanding and I congratulate them on their appointments.”
Wilson said he was happy with the way his squad was progressing with their opening game against the Roosters on March 14 less than five weeks away.
“We have been hampered by a few minor injuries to a few of the guys but all in all things are coming along well,” he said.
“Some of those injuries are a result of the increased workloads that they have had to endure, because their bodies are not used to being trained in a professional environment like this. But I’m happy with the way they are approaching things. They know the next month is crucial and they are all focused on that.”

The Rabbitohs NYC squad will play the curtain raiser fixtures before the Rabbitohs NRL sides’ trials against the Sharks at Bluetongue Stadium on February 23 and the Charity Shield on March 1 at ANZ Stadium.
