WWE Monday Night RAW Results 1/18/10
By Marc Middleton
Jan 18, 2010 - 8:00:47 PM

- Tonight's WWE RAW kicks off with a video package of Martin Luther King Jr. "Long live the dream" it says. We go to the opening RAW video. We go to the Thompson-Boling Arena where the pyro is going off. Michael Cole welcomes us to Knoxville, Tennessee. We've got Legacy vs. Kofi Kingston & John Cena tonight.

- We go to the arena where Vince McMahon makes his way to the ring.

Vince says life is about decisions. Sometimes you make good ones and sometimes they're bad. Vince says in business, all decisions are tough ones. He rips on the city of Knoxville. He says he made a decision a few weeks ago to let Bret Hart return to WWE and made a decision to kick Bret as hard as he could in the gut, leaving him lay in the ring. And last week, he made the decision that Bret Hart would never appear anywhere in WWE. Vince says he did this so fans could remember Bret as The Hitman, the way he was - not the way he is now. Vince calls Bret a broken down, old warhorse who needs to be put down. The crowd starts chanting for Bret. Vince says it's his decision to put people down when they need to be put down. Vince compares this to someone chewing gum and spitting it out because it loses flavor.

Vince says if he would have let Bret stay in WWE, that would have been like letting a disease in WWE. Vince compares Bret to gangrene on your finger. Vince calls the fans hypocrites. Vince says the fans want faster, bigger, better and they want more action. Vince says he didn't make the decision to ban Bret from WWE, the fans made it. They start telling him he sucks. The bell tolls, the lights go out and The Undertaker makes his way out.

The World Heavyweight Champion makes his grand return to RAW as the fans go wild. Vince says he wasn't finished talking and tells Taker this his time and his show. Taker says the way he sees it, this is his time now. Taker says he came out here to address Shawn Michaels but since Vince is here, Taker needs to tell him something his own ego won't allow him to admit. Taker says there isn't many of "us" left but he was there, 12 years ago, in Montreal. Taker says he saw the whole thing. Taker says he saw the fear in Vince's eyes then and he sees it now.

Taker says Vince screwed Bret and now he's scared of the consequences. Taker calls Vince a coward. Vince says he disagrees with Taker's point of view, but this is Taker's time. Vince walks out of the ring. Stubbornness, anger and denial. Taker says these aren't just the attributes of Vince - Shawn Michaels shares the same qualities. Taker says one year ago, Michaels said he would break the WrestleMania streak. Taker says HBK did prove he's Mr. WrestleMania but the streak is still intact. Taker wants to deliver his answer for this year personally. The music hits and out comes Shawn Michaels.

Shawn enters the ring and they stare at each other. Shawn says here he is, anxiously awaiting Taker's answer for the rematch. Taker tells Shawn he came closer than all the others on breaking the streak but still failed. Taker says a rematch this year will just result in more bitter disappointment for Shawn. Taker says he has nothing to prove. Taker says his answer to the challenge is no. The crowd boo's at this and Shawn doesn't like it either. Shawn says Taker has the audacity to come out here... Taker cuts him off. Taker says if Shawn is truly convinced he can beat him, they can have the match tonight on RAW. Shawn says no to this. He wants his victory over Taker to be on the grandest stage of them all. Shawn says he is going to win the Royal Rumble for a fact and when he does, he's coming for The Undertaker at WrestleMania for the World Heavyweight Title. Taker says he will be the World Champion at WrestleMania, despite the match with Rey Mysterio. Shawn tells Taker he will see him at WrestleMania. Shawn says Taker's streak, title and soul will be his. They come face to face in the middle of the ring. Taker's music hits and he exits the ring as we go to commercial.

The bell rings and Randy Orton comes walking out to the stage. Sheamus rams Bourne in the corner and goes to work on him. Sheamus notices Orton walking down the ramp and keeps working over Bourne.

Orton makes it to ringside and stares down with Sheamus. Bourne comes from behind and kicks Sheamus. Bourne unloads of Sheamus and hits the double knees from the top for a 2 count. Sheamus catches Bourne with a nasty backbreaker and a big kick to the face. Sheamus hits his finisher for the pinfall and the win.

Winner: Sheamus

- After the match, Randy Orton walks in the ring, still staring down Sheamus. Sheamus grabs his WWE Title belt and holds it up in front of Orton. Sheamus backs out of the ring and heads to the back, still locking eyes with Orton.

- We go backstage with DX. Shawn is upset about what happened in the ring with Taker. Don Johnson walks up and says he's a big fan of DX. He asks where his co-host Jon Heder is tonight, Don can't seem to find him. HBK says he doesn't know who Jon Heder is but if he runs into him, he will tell him. HBK asks Triple H if he needs to talk, Triple H says no and Shawn walks off. Shawn is in serious mode now. Triple H calls Heder an idiot, apparently they had a situation in the past. They tease that Heder hasn't shown up tonight. Johnson sees someone with their back turned and they're dressed like Napoleon Dynamite. Johnson thinks it's Heder but it isn't, it's Carlito. Carlito says he's never heard of Heder and walks off. We go to commercial. Did John Heder no-show RAW?

Miz says back in the day, Johnson was what Miz is now - the hottest thing on TV. Miz talks about Miami Vice and Miz puts down Tubs from Miami Vice, Johnson's partner on the show. I wouldn't mind a HHH/HBK feud if HBK was the heel, then again I just love seeing Michaels act like a prick, he seems far more natural that way. :)

The Sheamus/Orton build was 'ok'. Would've prefered to see Orton have one of his Legacy co-horts go at it with him and further tease a Legacy split.

The finally mentioned the Rumble, too bad it's a little too late. If I was writer by now everybody would be on their toes in excitement.

At RR hopefully Hunter dumps Shawn, and Shawn comes back and gets Hunter, setting up a HBK vs HHH mania match. They had a mania match in 2004 for the title, but neither won, and the title fell into another dimension until Summerslam 2004 when Randy Orton found it again...or at least it did in the WWE's eyes.

Sounds like a solid edition but it's a shame creative didn't do more with the episode.

The opening segment was good, the match sadly was an after thought. Really you could build a whole show around Legacy vying for the titles to placate Orton and hinting at some tension between the students and the leader. The latter promo was fine, but it felt out of place given the two had just finished their match and Orton wasn't scheduled to wrestle that night.

They used the wrong segment to make the Big Show a monster. Using MVP as his rag doll without any outside interference is dissapointing as MVP can use all the momentum he can get to appeal to the crowd.

McMahon/Cena promo was awesome. Well done by both men.

The rest of the show sounded solid, nothing too embarrassing, in fact, dare I say it, quite enjoyable. The WWE could certainly make things more exciting but all in all a solid effort.

Cena's promo with Vince was his best promo ever. For the past few months, Cena has been one of my favourite guys to watch, since they've appeared to ease up on the Super Cena persona, and make him more...well...human.

Miz Is one of the best things going around. He gets serious heat, moreso than Sheamus, in fact the only people who get more are Jericho and Punk. That's saying something.

Gail vs Maryse should be at the rumble, should be a solid match, especially for the Divas divison.

Hill was an alright guest host. Didn't book too much (I hate it when the celebrities book matches and stuff, it just irks me), and just made an all round pest of himself (with Cena almost as his bodyguard).

HHH vs HBK at Mania is looking more and more likely.

Show drops him. Kofi hits a dropkick on Show then dropkicks his knee out. Kick to the head by Kofi. He hits the Boom Doom Drop on Kofi for a 2 count. Kofi mounts Show in the corner with right hands. Show grabs Kofi's throat but he tries to fight off. Kofi's thumb went in Show's eye. Show accidentally hits the referee with the knockout punch and he goes down. Kofi goes back down as Show checks on the referee. Show calls for another referee to come down and he calls for the bell. Show gets disqualified. Show apologizes and says he didn't mean to, begging the referee.

Winner by DQ: Kofi Kingston

- After the match, officials come down and put the referee on a stretcher. Show is pissed as he kicks the ring steps. Show is yelling it was an accident as he walks up the ramp.

- We see Vince McMahon heading to the ring before taking another commercial break.

- Back from a break and Jerry Lawler is in the ring. He introduces a personal friend of his and tonight's guest host, William Shatner. Shatner comes out with The Bella Twins. He enters the ring and falls on top of Lawler, knocking them both to the mat. Shatner introduces the best there was, is and ever will be... Bret Hart. The music hits and out comes The Hitman to a big pop.

Bret enters the ring and gets a nice reaction from the fans. Bret says he's had about a month to think about what happened the last time he was on RAW. Bret says he came back for all the right reasons, thinking he could put it all behind him. He says he thought wrong. Bret says he didn't come tonight to make peace or get closure, he came to talk to Vince McMahon face to face. Bret tells Vince to get his ass out here or he will come up there with a camera crew and find him. Bret says he don't like to wait and he's getting madder.

Vince comes strutting out to the stage in typical McMahon fashion. Vince says he has some things to get off his chest also but says he has never regretted anything he's said or done to Bret. Hart calls Vince the world's greatest liar. Bret says Vince couldn't lace up his father's jock strap, talking about Stu. Bret talks about having a stroke eight years ago and being in a wheelchair, wondering what it would be like to walk again. Bret says he found the courage to stand up and get past it but says he felt pathetic sometimes. Bret says he promised himself then he would never feel pathetic again in his life. Then, he says, he came back to RAW and offered Vince his hand and Vince kicked him, leaving him in the ring feeling pathetic again. Bret says he has a problem with that.

Bret says he worked for Vince 14 years and always thought that one day Vince would appreciate him. Bret says Vince described him as chewing gum that lost it's flavor a few weeks ago. Bret says this stick of chewing gum has just enough flavor in it to kick Vince's ass. Vince says Bret's name and gets the crowd to pop, going over all Bret's nicknames. Vince says Bret being the best is all a crock of crap. Vince says Bret isn't a hero and the crowd boo's. Vince says he can't understand what the fans see in Bret. Vince says he thinks Bret is pathetic. Vince says Bret has no personality and says if it weren't for Bret's opponents like HBK or Austin who had personality, Bret would be nothing. Vince says Bret has no charisma, no command over the English language and a hound dog looking face. Vince disses Bret's hair and the way he dresses. Vince says Bret deserves to be screwed.

Vince says he mentioned before how Stu Hart might go into the WWE Hall of Fame. Vince says he thought about it and says Stu won't be going into the Hall because he doesn't deserve it. Bret kicks Vince in the gut and unloads on him with right hands. Bret goes to lock on the Sharpshooter. Out of nowhere, Batista rushes the ring and beats Bret down. Batista holds Bret facing Vince. Vince rips into Bret's face and spits on him. They toss Bret aside. RAW goes off the air with Vince McMahon irate and the crowd chanting for John Cena.

Happy to see DiBiase getting the rub ahead of Cody. I've always thought he was the one with the most potential. Love that they're booking Edge as a face, but I hope it's against Jericho and not Sheamus.

With the exception of the Orton/HBK match, could they have made the Elimination Chamber participants more obvious with those qualifiers? Did anybody really think we'd see Swagger and Rhodes in there ahead of Triple H and Cena? Even Kofi/Big Show was kind of predictable given recent pushes.

Yeah that's my complaint as well but really who else was there?

Masters? Miz? MVP?

Either way it was going to be fairly predictible.

Then again, I've always been against having qualifying matches for a match that's supposed to shorten lives. It should just be five guys gunning for Sheamus amongst themselves and having to do so in the EC prism.

I agree about the qualifying matches. What was the point, so very obvious!

Looks like Wrestlemania is shaping up similar to Vince & Umaga v Lashley & Trump but this time around Batista and Vince against Bret and probably Cena...

Be interesting to see what Edge does because all the talk leading in was Edge v Jericho. Jericho to win title at Elimination Chamber??

Wouldnt be surprised to see HHH v HBK after what happened on Raw. HBK missing out on the chamber and the chat that happened between the two. Mr Wrestlemania v DX member HHH.

Something would be on the cards with Orton and DiBiase too for the chamber. Legacy to finally break up with a match at Wrestlemania?

I reckon in the next couple of weeks we'll see a falling out between Orton and DiBiase and they will fall out of the EC match to fight each other.

Leaving a last minute entry for Jericho to take a spot in the EC, win the title and brag on about how he was the ultimate opportunist and so that builds up the Edge feud :p

I wouldn't be surprised to see HBK challenge Edge for his Mania spot in the main event, winning because of an Edge interference, leading to HBK/Taker and Edge/Jericho, although I really hope not.

I say for the SD Chamber match we'll have Taker/Tista/Jericho/Rey/Punk/Morrison (if he finally finished his fued with HHH #2). Jericho wins and faces Edge at mania, Raw's chamber is anyones guess.

I think for Mania we'll get;
Edge/Jericho
HHH/Sheamus
HBK/Taker
Orton/DiBiase
Cena/Batista (with Bret/Vince involved)
Punk/Rey

throw in a US title, an ECW title, MITB and an IC title match and you've got your card
