RLWC TV Rating Thread

TV ratings have exceeded almost all expectations at the World Cup – the opening night was the most watched Friday night league match in Australia this year and it's estimated as many as two million people watched Australia-France across all of Channel Seven's platforms.

But the projected profit for the tournament (the RLIF's only source of income) still hovers around $A7 million – a fair way down on David Smith's $12 million promise that forced the RLIF to turn down a $10 million bid from South Africa to host the current tournament.

Moore Sports International has guaranteed an eight-figure sum, too, for the 2025 World Cup in North America. The RLIF is currently conducting due diligence on that offer and it could be years before it is signed off on.

I've often wondered this. Whoever negotiates the rugby TV deals must either have friends in high places or is a genius. How they convince the networks to pay anything for these matches is beyond me. They don't really have much bargaining power either, even bledisloe games rate bugger all.

If it doesnt come with RWC it is worthless.

Similar ratings to the other matches. Was hoping for a little more as the match was on a Friday night. Still decent ratings.

Should be around 400K once regionals are added, so all in all a solid number.

Would be keen to see what the streaming numbers have been since Wk1. I wouldn't be surprised if the streaming minutes have grown since the opening round.

World Cup ratings impacting on the soccer. Imagine if we had a summer 9s circuit or similar.

“A-LEAGUE ratings on Fox Sports are way down on last season’s coverage. We’re told audiences have fallen 19 per cent due to the fact rugby league’s World Cup coverage on Channel 7 has taken viewers that would normally watch the soccer at this time of the year.“

Happens to RL as well when the FIFA World cup is on, just the reality of sports when a bigger event rolls into town

WORLD WINNER

THE Rugby League World Cup is on target to break all TV ratings and financial records.

Despite sluggish ticket sales at a few of the venues and some lopsided scorelines, organisers are hoping to make a profit of close to $10 million by the end of the tournament.

Channel 7’s figures are way beyond estimates and will be even higher at the business end of the tournament in the finals.

When do we get the UK ratings? ie Eng v Aust? Does anyone know?
Eng v AUS didn't crack the top 30 rated shows for the week on the BBC (understandable since it was shown at 9AM on a weekday). Unsure if there is any way of getting the specific viewing data other than that. Considering the 30th rated show was still 1.17 million its not a huge problem.

The viewers are there if the broadcast time is right. England v Fiji in the 2013 WC outrated a EPL game and a yawnion Test on the same day..

Yeah it simply didn't crack the weekly top 30 because they were all primetime shows, and the ratings database only shows the top 30 rated shows per week so AFAIK there is no way of getting hold of the actual figures for comparison. I'm sure it drew better than whatever is on at that time normally.

Once again great tv ratings results. However these figures would have been much bigger if coverage was given to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth on 7s main channel. I'm pretty sure other codes get such Australia wide coverage even when they rate well below rugby league's figures!?

Doesn’t these cities receive 7mate?

Channel 7 have to put the 2nd and 4th Quarter Finals on the main channel next week based on the ratings so far.

Both are currently scheduled for 7Mate. Yesterday's NZ v Tonga game smashed the Horse Racing on the main channel.

The 3rd Quarter Final is up against the News so fair enough if that one stays on 7Mate.
