The bold stats are why I am so sick and tired of hearing about us making It to the top 8 two years in a row off the back of two of the softest draws we could ask for, we cant beat good teams, we are flat track bullies and we went backwards last year and still extended him, its jobs for the boys at Penrith still.
Goulds 7 year rebuild has us as a mediocre side the last two years with not much prospect of getting better this year and we still have uncertainty surrounding key positions going forward, but hey apparently we are building(by releasing more talent then any other club).
Context is everything. In 2016, we introduced an 18 year old halfback. Soward, who suffered from various injuries through the year, played 12 games. Our 5/8th was a back rower who at that point had played 28 games. Our other 5/8th, TMM played 6 games, he was 20.
In 2017 we had a 19 year old halfback and a rookie fullback who had played 1 game in 2016 on the wing. We also played a rookie 5/8th who managed a total 5 appearances. We had the second or third youngest roster (an article in the Telegraph confirmed this). Our 2016 5/8th had terrible off field issues including the unfortunate suicide of a young lady and a pregnancy splashed over the front pages. Unless Hook set him up with the girl and stole his condoms I fail to see how that is his fault.
You say we are mediocre and Hook inherited a brilliant roster. No he didn't, what we really had was a side with rookies in the spine positions and a young roster. Gus tried to sign Carney. He tried to sign Thurston. Instead he got Soward, who to be fair was good for us until his body gave out.
Hook took what he had, rookies in key spine positions and made them competitive. Unfortunately our club captain, a key spine player, also turned out to be a party animal. No other team with such a young roster in key positions is in the eight. Is it perfect? No, but you do not provide any balance to the discussion. You choose to ignore any context.
Things are neither as bad as you say, or as good as Gus would say. Somewhere in between is about right.
