Josh McCrone had more try assists in less games than Cleary in 2017.
McCrone looked great on paper.

He had awesome stats. Ahead of many million dollar halves. Stats don't show when players go full genius though.

They need a way to measure that. To find out which of BJ Leilua and Will Smith is the king of those moments.

No one is arguing Cleary isn’t a consistently safe option.

Not sure safe is going to win us premierships though.

Because Cronk to Pearce is a sideways move for the most part

A 35 year old Cronk, pretty much.

A 30 year old Cronk shits all over Pearce.

Roosters won 17 games last year, they’ve won 15 this year with 2 to go. Where’s the improvement?

The proof of the Cronk signing will be in the finals.

I think there’s a misunderstanding of comparisons anyway.

Perhaps Cleary is comparable in style to Cronk, but he’s not comparable in ability.

This was the same thing that cropped up with Moylan. The comparisons of him to Lockyer were over style not ability.

Anyway the most relevant comparison for Cleary is Mitchell Pearce. He’ll never reach the heights of Cronk.

A million dollars isn't what it used to be. It is the going rate for halves moving forward
And has that worked out for well for any club? Not paying a million to an established consistent player of that ability like Cronk but to someone like Ash Taylor? Has any club ever done it and succeeded off the back of it ever? Perhaps instead of copying failures we should think what would the Storm do. And they would only give to a proven gun like Munster.

$1m might will be the going rate for halves one day, but it’s not right now.

The average right now is likely closer to the 700k mark.

There’s 32 starting halves in the comp, it’s only maybe 20-25% earning more than $1m.

The Storm are a bad example as they are still reaping the benefits of the salary cap cheating. They'd get who they want when they want at the price they want because they have Smith, Slater and a coach who looks like a super coach because of said players.

So the ever spinning revolving door at the Penny Panthers just keeps turning then? At some point we need to pick and stick or we'll never win anything. Cleary is worth backing

Say we sign Cleary for 4 years. That takes him to 2024...How many halves will then be on $1m a season? You never pay a players current worth. You take the gamble the value will be there over the course of the deal
