Yes definately. 2 Teams in Brisbane playing out of Suncorp and eventually a SW corridor team in a new stadium out that way. 5/6 Q'land teams would be a good eventual number.

Totally agree Red.

3/4 Brisbane teams would not be overkill.

One of the great things about the Sydney market is the rivalry amongst fans.
Brisbane people are missing out on that.

interesting, we havent really moved on in 17 years have we.

No we haven't.
And as a result, other codes have been able to move into SE Qld.

Just think Soccer and Aussie Rules have as many teams in SE Qld as Rugby League.
Ridiculous!

You do need to be careful how you split brisbane up with new teams. There is not the population or "sprawl" or tribalism the way you have it in Sydney. I know, I have lived both places and still do a lot in Sydney. They are very different and in some ways not obviously so.

I think a Western Corridor/Ipswich team is a much better idea than another otherwise undistinguished "Brisbane" team. They have the population and sense of self, as being separate to Brisbane, the right demographics and would be motivated supporters at all levels (fans, business and local government). Its LIKE a second Brisbane team, but not. Like Paramatta is a Sydney team, but not. Sort of. They have a great champion in Steven Johnson too. After that I would look to the Sunshine Coast for the same reasons. THEN drop a second team into Brisbane proper, or even look to Logan City instead. South East Queensland is all within an hours drive of Brisbane, but by not dropping a team right on top of the Bronco's you seed new areas and give the Bronco's supporters new external but still local enemies to fire them up.

I can see QLD support the current 3 teams plus two more teams in Brisbane, one SE (playing out of Lang Park), one SW - plus Sunshine Coast & eventually Central QLD.

It would mean up to 42 inter-queensland games a year - at least 1 every round - pretty much like having their own comp within a comp.

I'd go Brisbane Bombers next, they have the financial backing to make a strong go of it and take on the Broncos head on not to mention the stadium issue, then SW corridor in a few years when they have a stadium and have developed the bid, eventually somewhere on the coast either through relocation of if that area becomes big enough to sustain a team. Struggle is we probably don't want a comp bigger than 18 teams (and soem would say that is too many), we already have 16 clubs and have a potential 5 or 6 new areas we could expand into.

I think there's just too many areas that we can't ignore and the more teams we put in, the bigger our development growth and our potential playing pool.

When you get to anything over 20 you'd have to look at conferences and divisions. Not because of geography but to increase the competition at the seasons back end.

I see us going to 18 maybe 19 then 20 teams within 10 years. Stabilising for a while then expanding to 22-24 overall.

Western corridor is part of Brisbane and should be admitted next with Perth in 2014.

Its nice to see that the discussion here accepts that South Queensland MUST get another side asap.

Perth is also vital for broadcasting.

I think the best solution is to expand where the game NEEDS clubs, and the Bears can be put on permanent reserve in the event of any change in NSW.

Its a pity Manly were given the licence after the northern eagles debarcle - the Bears fit the games needs better than Manly does.

Branding the team the Brisbane Ipswich Bombers would do the job. Maybe down the track there would be funding for a hole in the wall 20k seater in Ipswich and they could split games 50/50

There WAS two teams in Brisbane, before Brisbane killed one!!!!!!!

The Bombers bid is the most stupid bid going around given that it does not have the "local team" aspect to draw fans away from existing teams.

Based in Logan, Ipswich or Redcliffe - a second Brisbane metro side would work. But it would need a stadium and a serious marketing attempt - WTF has bombers got to do with Brisbane??? A broncos clone in Suncorp would be f*cking stupid.

Still, it's odd plumping for a new team in an area awash with League fans when the same reasoning doesnt apply to those damning the Bears or suggesting Adelaide.

You are right in your assessment of the Bombers. It probably won't happen, they have not worked with the NRL enough, and the way they have staked their campaign has been poor.

Its also been the case for a long time now that Brisbane can and should have more sides, but the Broncos have ruthlessly protected their monopoly, probably to the detriment of Rugby League in Brisbane.

But to criticise them for not having a fan base or juniors is a bit dumb. Most new clubs don't have that sort of thing till they are given a licence. The Bears and Reds are unique in that way as they have previously existed in the top grade.

The Reds especially, they basically have an entire state body and junior structure behind them, and an established brand (albeit small ones).

The fan base thing - why would anyone support them?

Existing League fans follow a club. New clubs get fans purely because these fans are locals who adopt the club purely because they become their local team.

The people of Brisbane already have a local team.

Now it doesnt take a genius like Einstein, Steven Hawking or Ray Price to work pout that Reds fans will be Sandgropers supporting their local club. So who will become the Bombers supporter?

Thuis type of piggy back club has only been done twice before. South Queensland and Hunter. At a point of antagonism between them and their older home-town rivals, these clubs recorded the most abysmal run of crowd stats in living memory. Hunter struggled to get 1k to games.

And you think a repeat is a good idea?

Brisbane is a huge population, and can easily handle more than one club, but it should have happened in 1988. The carcasses of dead clubs from SEQ is staggering.

The bid has it's best chance by being Logan, Ipswitch or Redcliffe.

Hunter had the lowest crowds of any club in recent league history. SQ however averaged over 13k which isn't too bad at all.

If anything, the Crushers crowd stats show that SQ needs another team. f**k the Bombers though. They're a heartless, soul less corporate bid.

Any SQ bid would need to represent the Ipswich/Logan area and hopefully incorporate Toowoomba too.

Loudstrat - this is what I have been saying. The nature of the Brisbane demographic and its League history tells you everything you need to know. Another undistinguished Brisbane team will struggle. It needs to be Western Corridor (Ipswich way). A new club here needs it's own Tribe of supporters.
