Should there be a play off for third place?

As both Canberra and the Cowboys bow out of the preliminary finals bitterly disappointed, their year worth of efforts goes largely unrewarded.

As is done in the biggest sporting competitions in the world, the teams who bow out in the preliminary stage would play to be officially crowned the third best team in the NRL for that particular year. If the NRL adopted this initiative, we would have been provided with some classic matches to crown the leagues bronze medallist. Imagine the Dragons vs Parramatta in 2005, or seeing the Roosters battle the Storm for third place last year.

The third place match would be a welcomed addition to the week long grand final week festivities. Perhaps it could be played on a weeknight during grand final week, or perhaps there could be a week break for the bronze medal to be decided, with the grand final occurring the week after. This year, a Raiders-Cowboys fixture would potentially outshine the grand final itself. The Raiders free flowing attack against the Cowboys clinical nature would be a sight to behold.

Overall, it would give the team who comes third a tangible representation of their success throughout the year, instead of being long forgotten.

No. Its a pointless idea no matter how fluffily you dress it up.

Can you imagine teams celebrating winning third?

Didn't think so.

Absolutely not. It would be worse than City/Country with guys pulling out all over the place and you'd have your cousin Eddie in at five eighth and some bloke they'd pulled from the crowd five minutes before kick off (at quarter to nine or some BS courtesy of KFC, Suzuki D-Max, Holden and whoever else).

No,there shouldn't even be a GF or finals series in the first place,NRL should be like the EPL in whoever finishes first on the ladder wins.
