Likely because of 2 factors

1. It was the first time the concept was run

2. NSW based supporters get next to no exposure to the QLD Cup

Both comps need better respect from the punters and the broadcasters

A national Reserve grade comp fixes both of this

..and also destroys a lot more. I would hate to see traditional clubs like Nth Sydney, Redcliffe, Newtown, Wynnum, etc be pushed down another level

Broadcasters just need to value that level of league more imo. A national reserve grade comp wouldnt address this issue

If it's instead of the NYC I don't think it would. The state cups would get the kids etc.

Reality is that we can't have a single reserve grade when half the competition is based in one city.

2 clubs for the 3M people in SEQ, 1 club for the 4M Kiwis, no clubs for the 4M people in WA and SA... Sort that out and then we can talk about a unified/national reserve grade.

A national Reserve grade comp fixes both of this

There is this complete lack of understanding of what makes the Queensland Cup such a great competition.

The games are played at local grounds, $10 to get in, food and drink are affordable, plenty of parking, the play is 10 metres from you, you can have a kick on the ground at half time, there is interaction between the players and the spectators. At Wynnum, the team on occasions goes into the can bar at the end of the match to sing their victory song. They are local heroes, as I'm sure they are at Redcliffe, Cairns and Mackay.

National Reserve Grade comp - play in empty soulless stadiums, the majority of away games are unreachable, teams have no local identity - just the leftover players from an NRL club.

Do people in NSW understand that the Queensland Cup clubs are stand alone? They sign their own players, have their own supporters, have wonderful history and identity. They incorporate a handful of unwanted NRL contracted players into their teams each week, but that is not their lifeblood. They are not Reserve Grade teams of anyone. It is the players like Tim Natusch, Liam Georgetown, Steve Thorpe and Phil Dennis who play for the same club for years that shape the competition.

Is it the same honour to play 100 Reserve Grade games for an NRL club as it is to play 100 for Redcliffe or Wynnum ? Do they even celebrate it ?

Leave it alone. If it's broken in NSW, fix it there but don't touch our competition.

+1 on this. The interest super cup has gone from strength to strength in the past few years. I know it is fashionable to bash the media but Channel 9 and journos like Chris Garry and Peter Badel have really put the comp on the map up here. The introduction of PNG was a massive success and Townsville are already building a strong squad for next year

Luckily the NRL are aware, or at least have been made aware by the QRL, of the value of the state league and nothing will change there.

What did Pride have 4 Cowboys contracted players? Most teams are similar. So how would taking them out make any difference to the competition?

They'd be taking way more than 4 players to build NRL reserve grade sides.

Q Cup & NSW Cup are both great comps. Let them be.

In QLD Cup they are spread around so it's about 4 per team or something. Won't happen before expansion anyway.

On the reality front, the NRL clubs don't want the expense of running a reserve grade team. It is much easier to farm out the extra players to Queensland Cup clubs who provide the infrastructure for them.

A national reserve grade competition would be neither one thing nor the other, it's not NRL level and it doesn't have the pluses of a local club competition. Who would go to watch ?

Murgha, Bowen, Feldt, Thorby, Riethmuller, King, Lowe, Spina all played regularly for the Pride this year. Pat Kaufusi joined them when he got back from injury and Rob Lui spent time there. More than 4 players went down to Mackay as well. Same with the Gold Coast feeder sides and Melbourne with Easts and Canberra with Souths Logan.

Apart from probably only Brisbane's feeder sides, there were a lot more than just 4 per team.

Yet they fund a NYC team. much better to leave the teenagers and co to the respective State comps and have a reserve grade comp over the farce that is NYC

I don't think a national reserve grade competition will ever happen, and I hope it doesn't.

Reserve grade adds very little to the rugby league world. It would bring no new teams or supporters, and public interest would be low. It would just replicate the existing unbalanced distribution of clubs in the NRL.

On the other hand a national second division is a real possibility. It would have to grow out of the Queensland Cup. If the QCup was expanded to include a handful of historic clubs from NSW and elsewhere it would be the perfect second division.

I would include North Sydney, Newtown, Wests, Balmain and Illawarra, who all still exist in some way in the lower levels.

Or have neither like they used to.
This ... let them all come through their respective State comps.

If we are going to have expansion then I must admit that a two division competition with 12 teams each and promotion/relegation has its attractions.

50 - Nil... Panthers

Penrith will win by 40+

This isn't working out how some thought.

Some classic NSW ignorance on display in this thread.

The total disrespect by the southern clique is wonderful and proves that real rugby league feelings are alive and well ... one Origin series and they've reclaimed their arrogance ... lol@thelotofyou

Great win FNQ!!!!

FMD all two of them, I'm surprised you could type with that massive chip on your shoulders.

Was a great game
