Matulino out for 1 week with early plea. That leaves us with 2 frontline props. Does it mean more time for Satae and a debut for Sipley. P ?

Unfortunately i think it means we probably get C Gubb back in first grade due to the lack of experience of the other 2.

Please have Roach starting at 9 again.

Veteran prop Jacob Lillyman makes his 250th career appearance but he won’t have his regular front row partner Ben Matulino alongside him in the Vodafone Warriors’ 24th-round NRL match against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Friday (6.00pm kick-off local time; 8.00pm NZT).

Matulino will miss Lillyman’s milestone through a one-match suspension after taking an early guilty plea on a shoulder charge offence in last Sunday’s clash against Canberra.

The 33-year-old Lillyman, who joined the Vodafone Warriors in 2009 after 62 games for North Queensland, was converted into a front rower in 2011.

Of his 187 appearances for the club so far, 151 have been as a starting prop or as an interchange front rower, more than 130 of them with Matulino in the trenches with him.

On the field for 62 minutes against the Raiders, Lillyman carted the ball up 15 times for 155 metres – the best of any forward in the match – and added 26 tackles. He is now averaging close to 128 metres and 26 tackles across his 20 games this year, well up on his numbers in the previous three seasons.

Lillyman becomes just the 112th 250-game player in the competition’s 109-year history.

Paired up with him on Friday night is Sam Lisone, who’ll be starting for the fourth game on end after being used almost exclusively as an interchange prop during his 60-game career.

Matulino’s absence results in a first-grade return for Charlie Gubb, who has come back from a hernia operation.

Last used at NRL level in the 11th-round match against St George Illawarra in Hamilton, Gubb made 128 metres from 15 carries for the club’s 26-16 Intrust Super Premiership win over Wentworthville on Sunday. He’s set for his 38th career outing on Friday night.

Also named to come back into the side this week is veteran standoff Kieran Foran, who missed the Canberra clash with a shoulder complaint. His availability sees Mason Lino move to an extended bench with Ata Hingano in line to team up in the halves with Foran for the first time. Apart from Gubb and Lino, the others named on the eight-man bench are Issac Luke, Chris Satae, Isaiah Papali’i, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, James Ball and Toaf Sipley.

After losing four games on end, South Sydney has beaten St George Illawarra 26-24 and Canterbury-Bankstown 28-14 to move to 11th on the table on 20 points, two ahead of the 12th-placed Vodafone Warriors.

The Vodafone Warriors’ record against the Rabbitohs is their second best against all current teams in the competition. They have an 18-12 advantage in 30 encounters and 9-6 in 15 away matches at various venues (ANZ Stadium, Sydney Football Stadium, North Sydney Oval and nib Stadium in Perth).

Souths has won each of the last five games – two in Auckland and three in Perth – but this will the first time they’ve met at ANZ Stadium since 2011 (when the Vodafone Warriors won 48-16). It’s the fourth season in a row that the clubs have met just once.

lol - Lino dropped, presumably for forcing too many repeat sets, CNK still can't get a run despite Maumalo sucking the life out of a comeback, and best of all we lose a player to a shoulder charge and Crazy Charlie is back!

Gubb has a storming finish to the year in our last three games and gets rewarded with a new 3 year contract.

WTF would you play Foran again this year? Why Why Why....

Signed elsewhere, you cannot make finals, you only gain experience doing.

Clinging to the hope the Bulldogs cannot afford him?

Oh yeah Angry - why the f**k would you play Foran again, what the f**k is the point?

Then why would you pick Lino for a bunch of games, he pretty much does all that's expected of him and then drop him after Ata (who many thought should have been the first cab anyway) has one game...

He gives potatoes a bad name

how the f**k is CNK not in the team, yet Maushitto and Kata-f**kinghshit are.

Oh yeah, that one really hurts

We were going well until Maumalo dropped that ball, then they scored on that edge - not saying we were going to win, but FMD that put us in a hole

Dropping Lino is weird too, as has been the treatment of Hingano - with CNK these three have done relatively little wrong and last week the two that played did a lot right - yet he picks Foran again - I'm not surprised, but as Angry says, the Chewbacca argument is the only thing I can think of...

Anyway, pretty much the team I expected, aside from I had him dropping Ata - six of one as it were

March the following up to the Mt Smart pearly gates:

Hoffman
Kata
Lisone
Foran
Luke
Thompson

All possibilities with them done and dusted.

Build a new spine: Fusitua, Hingano, Lino, Roache.
Johnson to bench one of them when he's fit again.

RTS, Ayshford, CNK, Ken in the backline.

Get Tevaga into lock, fill up the rest of the forwards with anyone who's not injured or in the list above.
We're burned on experience, but look at where 'experience' has got us thus far.

Being a bit mean here cause the guy puts in week after week, but these stats are misleading. So many of Lillyman's meters are from restart returns after points or from line dropouts. And he gets a lot of restart opportunities after points...Actual hard earned meters and post-contact meters pretty slim.

On Maumolo's drop ball - he was set up terribly on that one - whoever passed it to him (Lino?) dummied to him and then passed on the second pump which for a relatively short ball is a disaster - poor bloke was three quarters of the way through trying to catch the first non pass and then the second, actual pass was on its way. Wasn't his fault IMO, just laughably bad service and most players would have spilt their lollies as Gould would say.

Lillyman was really good last week IMO and is good generally without being elite. I'd be happy keeping him rather than Blair, but we need a real powerhouse there too

And it was bad service but Maumalo was still entitled to catch it

(sigh) under the salary cup you get to bring players up to fill positions open due to injury with special dispensation under the salary cap. If you can play the player in your top squad back in the position you HAVE to or be over the second tier cap etc etc. This is because most 2nd tier players get game payments for playing 1st grade (normal contract conditions under NRL rules). Usually there's a bit of room to give a few some experience at some point during the seaso but rarely on a regular (or permanent) basis. Foran has to play in place of ata or mason & as johnson is still out due to injury he can play one of them but not both. He has NO CHOICE ffs. Same reason he can't keep playing CNK every week. Next year is a different matter if he has been elevated to the top squad. What part of all this don't some of you get? With injuries to forwards he has to play who's available from the top squad, not players from 2nd tier or the same thing happens. He;s brought up a couple when injury has forced it but can't keep doing it.
But hey, what you guys want is more important than what the rules allow & why spoil a good negative moan...

putting on my cynic hat, but this is not the first time Matulino has gone for a holiday with a shoulder charge, when the season was over for the Warriors. finished the season 3 games early either last year or year prior and think he has done it one other time as well, both times Shoulder charges.
Wondering if he miscalculated how many points he had already, as with early plea, he has to come back for one game.
/removes cynic hat
