NK was working towards nukes a long, long time ago. Drop all the left v right bullshit. The Kim before the current Kim's dad should have, in hindsight, been dispensed with. If not him then the Kim before this one. If not him then the current one. Now we're in a tough spot.

The West has laughed off NK for a long time, dismissing their rocket launches as nothing but bravado, telling everyone they're decades from being able to hit anyone with a standard missile, let alone a nuke. What now?

I didn't know that. Do you have any references to that? I'm very interested.

Perhaps, but their God is the current living Supreme Leader, and we're not sure how many actually believe that, I'm sure a lot play along just to avoid death.

Regardless, they're not like Muslim extremists in that they'll strap themselves with bombs and wander into Seoul to blow up a bus. I'm sure the NK's would have little options outside of dying for their cause but they haven't shown they are willing to be wiped out based on a belief of some awesome afterlife.

I'm sure Abe is itching for an excuse to enact military building policy in Japan.

It is a very sad scenario now. So many North, South Korean and Japanese lives stand to be lost here. I'd wager Kim will fight tooth and nail to hang on to what he has because the end game is that he's dead no matter what. If he flees the DPRK the US will hunt him down. If he cedes his leadership he's dead. He needs his arsenal to deter action, it seems more like an act of self preservation here. If he's going down he will take as many as he can with him. China, while their allies, are probably cognisant of this fact also and will support Kim to make striking North Korea less attractive as they obviously will not want a nuclear war on their border.

North Korea threatens Australia with disaster

North Korea has criticised and threatened Australia for aligning itself with South Korea and the US and for its attitude toward the Pyongyang regime, according to state-run media.

'Lately, Australia is showing dangerous moves of zealously joining the frenzied political and military provocations of the US against the DPRK,' state-run news agency KCNA said in a statement on Saturday.
Panmunjom is located within the tense demilitarised zone, a four kilometre-wide strip that separates the two Koreas, which have technically been at war for more than 65 years.

The Australian foreign minister personally expressed her support for the stand of the US to consider all options including the use of force towards the DPRK, and turned up at Panmunjom on October 11 together with the Australian defence minister to condemn the DPRK during her visit to South Korea,' it added.

The statement refers to the visit to South Korea this week by Julie Bishop and Marise Payne during which they met their counterparts and visited the truce- village of Panmunjom.

During the visit, the ministers stressed the need for diplomatic pressure to thwart North Korea's nuclear ambitions and urged the country not to carry out any more weapons tests and halt its nuclear and missile program.

'We stand united with (South Korea) against the provocative and threatening behaviour of North Korea,' Ms Bishop said.

The ministers discussed ways to work together to compel North Korea back to the negotiating table.

Senator Payne and Ms Bishop also visited the Korean War Memorial to pay their respect to the 340 Australians who lost their lives during the Korean War.

'Should Australia continue to follow the US in imposing military, economic and diplomatic pressure upon the DPRK despite our repeated warnings, they will not be able to avoid a disaster,' KCNA warned.
