The American comp

The American comp kicks off this weekend, so I thought I'd have a go at a preview of each team for this year.

It promises to be a very exciting season in America, with 6 of the 8 clubs being real chances to win the comp.

Glen Mills Bulls - sister club to the Canterbury Bulldogs - The Bulls have always been the side to beat in America. They won every title contested till beaten in a controversial grandfinal by the New York Knights last season (the game was abandoned halfway through due to a severe thunderstorm, Knights were ahead at the time but Bulls were coming home much stronger). The star recruit for the Bulls is Marcus Vassilakopoulos, who is tipped to be the best player in the comp and has played professionally in both England and Australia. The Bulls have also recruited several promising young American players.

New York Knights - sister club of the Newcastle Knights - Last season was the first season for the Knights. During much of the season they were unable to raise a team and only just managed to make the playoffs after forfieting several games. In the playoffs they beat the minor premiers New Jersey Sharks and then pinched the grandfinal from the Bulls. For many of the players the grandfinal was only their 4th game of Rugby League. The two leading players for the Knights will again be former Manly lower grader Matt Astill and former US Union and current League international Bobo Balachandran. The Knights have now formed an alliance with 6 Union sides based in NY and believe they will be able to field a very competitive side from those players and several overseas recruits.

Conneticut Wildcats - were to be sister club to the Panthers, but now to link up with the Wests Tigers - This club is a breakaway club from the NY Knights and is playing it's first season. Four US Tomahawks backline players are the motivators for the breakaway, and they have been joined by two Australian who were playing division 1 in France (former Manly lower graders) and two players from country NSW, as well as many players from Conneticut based Union sides and a few gridiron players. They look to have a side that is full of talent and they should improve every game.

Washington DC Slayers - sister club to Saints - this club is the real darkhorse. It is also a new club, and most of the players have completely unknown pedigrees, but it is being put together by a man who works in the New Zealand embassy and so has access to many Kiwis in Washington and surrounds. This team could be anything from a bunch of old has beens to 17 big and nasty islanders with years of League experience. Only time will tell.

New Jersey Sharks - sister club to Cronulla - they were the minor premiers and standout club last season but somehow found a way to lose the title (sound familiar). They are a club made up of largely young Americans and they have been playing together for up to four seasons now. Each season they become more experienced and therefore better. They are the team with the second highest number of Tomahawk players after the Bulls.

Media Mantarays - sister club to Parra - This is their third season and they are also a team of young American players who improve every year. They have some of the best Tomahawk players and I think many of their guys are set to really come good this year.

New Jersey Vikings - sister club to the raiders - A club that struggled last season and don't seem to have picked up anyone in the offseason. I think they will struggle to get a side together every week.

The Philly Fight - sister club to Souths - apart from having one of the best players in America - Jeff Preston - they have nothing. they come last nearly every year and this year will be no exception.

Good to see the AMNRL expanding, even if at a slower rate than one would have hoped.

What happened to the game in the western US?

It looks like the western states might finally play a few games this year, with four teams set to play a couple of exhibition games soon.

Results for week one

Philadelphia Fight 22 @ Media Mantarays 16

Glen Mills Bulls 42 New Jersey Vikings 12

New York Knights 20 @ Connecticut Wildcats 34

New Jersey Sharks 26 @ Washington D.C. Slayers 56

These are great results. The Fight knocking off Media is a great result for the Fight, but only time will tell if it means the Fight have improved or Media are going backwards.

The Bulls over the Vikings is the expected result, and the scoreline is about what would have been expected too.

Wildcats getting a handy first up win over last seasons premiers is a great result for them. Some of their players are boasting that they are going to go through the season undefeated.

The DC Slayers destroying last season's minor premiers will be putting the fear of God into the whole competition. It looks like these guys are the real deal. It might end up a grandfinal between the two new sides, Slayers and Cats.

Damn, the NJ Sharks lost.

The vikings look goooornnn after just three games unfortunately.

The Wildcats are the team to beat it looks. They have beaten the Knights twice and the Bulls once and picked up bonus points from every win. Former Manly lower grader Ben Kelly and former Saints lower grader Walter Raleigh have formed a lethal combination with former Qld cup player Mike Mulvihill and three current Tomahawks backs. Another to impress is former gridiron player Mike McCrechy who has been named in the Tomahawks side after just a handfull of League games (he has played a few seasons of Union).

The Knights have recruited a back who has been a Wallaby and a Brumby and also several other good players.

The Bulls are stronger than ever, but are still behind the Cats and maybe even the Knights.

The slayers started the season looking like the team to beat, but have since struggled to get the numbers and have lost against the Bulls and Sharks.

The Sharks started badly, but are starting to find their form. They still have their two best forwards out with injuries at present.

Media started badly because their Union side was still playing finals and they couldn't get player numbers, but they have picked up in recent weeks.

The Fight won their first game against Media to the surprize of all, but are now slipping backwards fast.

The Vikings have forfieted a game already and are struggling to get numbers. They are also in the conference with the Cats, Bulls and Knights, who look to be the three strongest teams at this point.

The American season has entered the semi final stage. The five finalists in order are;

Wildcats
Bulls
Sharks
Knights
Slayers

The Wildcats have been the standout team all season. They have two young guys who were NRL reserve grade players with Manly and Saints respectively and who played the off season in the French first div. As well as those two they have a few more players from country NSW and 4 players from the Tomahawks as well. Unfortunately for them a perfect record was denied them when they lost a close game to the Bulls in Glen Mills last week. They look like they will be one of the grand final teams for sure.

The Bulls have been slightly behind the Slayers and have also lost to the Sharks this season, but their season turned around three weeks ago when three of the grandfinal winning Canterbury Jersey Flegg side joined their ranks for the rest of the season. They haven't lost a game since, and, with a good part of the Tomahawks side playing for them plus three great imports, they look to be the only real dangers to the Cats.

The Sharks are having their second season under a well credentialled coach from the Hunter Valley/New England region of NSW. The side gets better with each game they play, and they have done it largely with only young American players. Their captain has only been back with the side for about a month after spending some time with a country NSW team learning how to play. The Sharks are doing it the hard way, but the right way in my opinion.

The Knights, last year's premiers, have had an up and down season. They started the year by having nearly all their star studded backline go off and form their own club (the Wildcats). Since that time they have had to train up many new players to fill the void. They looked like they would get their act together for the finals, as they did last season, but now their star forward, Rauhi, has sustained a season ending injury. They have talent to burn, but may find it hard to get over the three very good sides ahead of them this season, although they have shown they are big match performers.

The Slayers have just snuck into the finals. They have had some good results in their home town of DC, but they have failed to field a side several times when asked to travel. Last week they showed that they are taking the end of season far more seriously by recording a 72-20 win over the Media Mantarays who were challenging them for 5th spot. The Slayers are the dark horses. No one really knows how good they can be if they get their entire squad together and focused.

All five teams will be a chance, but it should be a Bulls v Cats grandfinal, with the Bulls looking like slight favourites at this stage.

The Knights had a hard fought 22-18 win over the Slayers and the Bulls had an easy win over the Fight (they rested half their team).

The semis will be - Knights v Cats and Bulls v Sharks

The Cats should beat the Knights fairly comfortably after beating them twice during the season, but the other game could go either way, with the Bulls being slight favourites.
Personally, I'd like to see a Knights v Sharks grandfinal because those are the two teams who have tried the hardest to train up young Americans to play the game.

The Cats will play the Bulls in the grandfinal.
Both semis were hard and close affairs, with the Bulls v Sharks game said to be to best game played in the US to date. Players from both sides complained about the amount of niggle and off ball incidents, so you know they were all taking it seriously.

The Cats and Bulls have played twice this year for one win each. The game will be held at the home ground of the Bulls in front of a crowd of 1500 - 2000.
I'm thinking the Bulls will win a close game.

The grandfinal was won easily it seems by the Cats.
I really thought the Bulls would win with the help of three canterbury flegg players and half the Tomahawks in their side.

It goes to show that the standard in America has lifted by a huge amount this year when a Bulls side that is obviously stronger than last year can be easily beaten by a new side in the comp, and at least three other sides also put in great efforts this season (Knights, Slayers, Sharks).

I think this season has seen the American game really start to come of age. I can't wait to see how the national side has improved in their next outing against NZ Maori in Utah.
