The world according to Langer begins:

Mitchell Marsh is in the box seat to become Australia's next Test vice-captain after his leadership qualities were given another strong endorsement by national selectors on Wednesday.

The one-time whipping boy of Australian cricket now looms as the favourite to become captain Tim Paine's deputy after being named skipper of the Australia A four-day side for the tour of India.

While Aaron Finch, Alex Carey and Travis Head are all being viewed as potential future leaders at Jolimont, none have played at Test level.

Pat Cummins, another with claims to the vice-captaincy after being drafted onto Rick McCosker's panel for the player-led review into the national team, played down suggestions he was a contender, saying he wanted to focus on his own game.

Newly appointed national coach Justin Langer Langer has spoken glowingly of Marsh's leadership skills, after installing the all-rounder as Western Australia captain, while former international Simon Katich said before the ball tampering episode he would be eventually succeed Smith as Test skipper.

The vice-captaincy will be discussed by CA directors at the board meeting next week.

"It's there, it's not something I'm focused on solely," Marsh said. "I want to become the best cricketer and best person I can be. If that means I become Test vice-captain then so be it."

Head, the South Australia skipper, will lead Australia A for the one-day matches with Carey the vice-captain for both formats.

"We're looking for leaders for future Australian teams, and Travis, Mitch and Alex are all very impressive young men," Hohns said. "Travis and Mitch both have captaincy experience at state level, and this is an exciting opportunity for them to lead a new group of players in different conditions.

"Alex, as our Twenty20 vice-captain in the UK and Zimbabwe, is also someone we rate very highly as a leader, and this is another opportunity for him to develop those skills."

Incumbent trio Matt Renshaw, Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb face challenges for their Test berths from uncapped pair Head and Kurtis Patterson in the two four-day games.

Selectors had initially planned for Maxwell to play in India but given his extensive experience on the subcontinent they decided to use the series as a chance to assess others in the foreign spin-friendly conditions.

It is shaping as a crucial few months for Maxwell, who can cement his position in both the Test and one-day international sides after being dropped from both teams last summer.

Shaun Marsh, another absentee for the "A" tour, can now join Paine as a lock for the Tests, so too Mitchell Marsh, pending fitness after ankle surgery.

The younger Marsh brother is aiming to bowl in India before stepping up his workload in preparation for the UAE.
