Where do AFL clubs get their $$$ from?

Some RL clubs are trying to move away. The Dogs were involved in the infamous Oasis project at Liverpool. And since the pokies tax is coming in, perhaps Carr should tell the Land & Environment Court to shut up and let the Sharks Development Proposal through.

AFL clubs get revenue from tv, crowds, sponsors, mechandise.
Poker machines were only introduced into victoria a few years ago, and are far more limited than NSW. (NSW has around 10% of the world's poker machines).
I dont know of any AFL club that makes more than token money off them, and there have been a few spetacular failures like the roos broadmeadows venture which cost them plenty.

The effect the tax will have on rugby league is highly overrated in my opinion. One person says it will cripple the game and the rest take it as the bible. It will limit profits but it won't cripple the game.

Is that it? Damn SL war - fancy giving away those TV rights for a piddly $15,000,000/year!

Less fountains in the foyer.
Less marble in the auditorium.
Probably won't affect the quality of the lunches in the board room though.

In the end the community programs that clubs engage in are selective and not of benefit to the whole of society. I prefer the government, who face a general election every 4 years, to set the spending priorities in this state.

poker machines have a 3% return. for every $1000 put in them, the chances are you will lose $970 and the clubs make $30.

And who gets the other $940? I think you mean you'll take get $970 back and the club gets $30. As Moffo says though, that ain't necessarily the case.

Say we're dealing with a 90% return $1 machine. You put in $100. After 100 spins, youd have, on average, $90 left. If you limited yourself to 100 spins, that'd be the end of it. But most people keep going until they win big or do their dough. So after another 100 spins, we've lost another $10 to get to $80. And so on, until the money runs out.

What about the rest of Carr's policies? You know, the roll back of stamp duty on the purchase of a house for public servants and the ever increasing tolls on roads and increases in public transport?

Carr is gone, that much I can assure you. Why didn't Carr slug the hotels/pubs with the tax as they have plenty of pokies too?

If you blokes think this tax will only affect RL, then you are all pissing in each others pocket. NSW is the most overtaxed state in Australia and one of the most expensive places to live in the world.

Someone here mentioned AFL revenues. Aren't the swans in debt up to their eyeballs and half the Melbourne clubs will go to the wall in the next five years if not for the intervention of the AFL to prop up these clubs (Western Bulldogs, Kangaroos, St Kida).

You see, the hyprocrisy of Carr and dumb shit cronie is he puts a tax on the clubs but allows the transfer of liquor licences fromn pubs int he bush to relocate to the city and then the pubs have their quota of pokies too.

The NSW govt are so out of touch with reality and the common man that it will cost them govt at the next state election. The very people they are going to slug with this tax are the ones who put them in power in the first place.

Tlk about shitting in your own backyard!

Spending priorites? LMFAO. That's the biggest crock of shit I have ever heard.

The govt gives very little to public health and education and if we talk about the marble in the auditorium of clubs, then why not abolish subsidised grog at parliament house for the fat cats?

Again, the abolition of stamp duty for public servants purchasing a property?

The transitway in Sydney's west. A 170 million white elephant with little or no patronage.

The increase in tolls.

Land tax.

Public transport and the outdated infrastructure that can't handle the shitty new trains this govt tried to introduce (unsuccessfully of course).

The abolition of concession fares for pensioners which will have a huge burden on the public health system within five years.

The list goes on and on.

You blokes have no idea about this govt. They are parasites with absolutely zero interest in the opinion of joe average.

I agree everyone should pay tax but the burden has to be spread around.

Why keep slugging the people who put you in govt in the first place.

This govt is a disgrace. They only managed a surplus due to the stamp duty windfall. They are pathetic economic managers and they are a bunch of eccentric weirdos who care more for the arts than they do anything else.

Have a read of the Parry report. This old fossil who never uses public transport was commissioned to do a report on public transport with a recommendation that fares go up across the board while the service is as pathetic as ever. Sounds fair doesn't it?

Absolute scumbags!!!!

Here is a list of things that the club industry have claimed will ruing them

1. Sydney Casino
2. Pokies in pubs
3. Not being able to advertise poker machines are at the venue
4. Having to shut down their machine for up to 4 hours a week

Guess what - they are still out there and even getting bigger.
The main reason leagues clubs have tried to reduce what they pay to their NRL team is that they want to renovate their foyer and put in more pokies (again)

Here is an example of what happened at St George Leagues club over the last 10 years or so

Originally they had a large main bar and a small pokie room on the side.
The bar was moved to the small room on the side - the large room is now chocker with pokies.
Gym - gone
Squash courts - gone
Snooker tables - gone
Barber shop - gone
Nightclub - gone

Also the auditorium had a leak in the roof so they had to close it - it has been closed for a few years now. In that time they have managed to put in more poker machines and renovate their foyer a couple of times and have 24 hour trading.

But they do find a few hundred dollars for the cricket club in their tight budget.

well said bazza. i was switching between laws and hadley this morning, and heard (not sure which station... probably 2UE) that only something like 2% of profits from pokies are directed towards the community that the clubs are claiming will be crippled as a result of this.

i then heard brogden (who i now realise i gave him more credit than he deserves) claim that tens of thousands of jobs will be lost from clubs as a result of patrons not going in for cheap meals / beer etc and club staff having to be laid off.

total propaganda anti govt / spin doctoring. what about the thousands of cafe's, restaurants and bars that already struggle to compete with meals from clubs subsidised from the pokies?

I live in the area of Mounties, Liverpool Catholic Club and Club Marconi. There aren't many cafes around these clubs I can assure you.

Let's assume for a minut ethe clubs will keep their social services and just can sponsorship of sporting clubs. Who is left to pick up the tab? Literally, hundreds of sporting clubs (not just league) will fold overnight.

All this can directly related to the spiralling cost of insurance in NSW as well. Another area Mr Carr has failed miserably. Have a look at his reforms to Workers Comp and the cost of insuring yourself to play sport these days. It costs around $200.00 for registration for any sport, not just league.

I'd like to know exactly what/who Mr Carr does support, becuase it's fairly evident he doesn't support people playing sport, the elderly, home buyers, public transport users, students, clubs, injured workers, investors, motorists, TAFE students. Have I missed anyone?

No but a link can be made indirectly.

To be honest, I don't know what Willow's stance is on this issue but it surprises me we actually agree on something.

Think about it though. We run a website about rugby league or more precisely, the NRL. We hope to make some money out of the website one day and if the product we promote isn't around, well we aren't going to do too well are we?

To be honest, I feel pretty much the same way about the Libs at the moment but the difference is, you expect it from them.

Bob Carr would have to be more right wing than Howard and he (Carr) is widely despised by most people I know.

Almost every initiative they have tried has failed. They are self serving beuarecrats who are only thinking of life after politics. IMO, Carr is showing his financial nouse (or lack thereof) to prospective employers after Labor get booted out in the next state election.

Getting on with the job my arse!

If you want to make money - get some pokies...

We provide too many community services and as such, any pokie revenue would be taxed at such a rate that the viability of the website wouldbe compromised. It's a risk we just can't afford to take.
