As the Rabbitohs prepare to take part in the third ever Auckland Nines tournament this weekend, we look back at the Club’s first two forays into the event.
The men in red and green have played a total of 11 Auckland Nines matches since the first tournament in 2014, coming away with eight victories, including their undefeated effort in 2015 that saw the side take out the competition in only its second year.
During both tournaments, the Club advanced past the pool stages, going down to hosts the New Zealand Warriors in the 2014 Quarter Finals, while winning a thrilling golden-point extra-time Grand Final in 2015 over Cronulla-Sutherland, with former Test player, Matt King, coming out of retirement to score the tournament-winning try.
The last instalment also saw three Rabbitohs named in the team of the tournament – Adam Reynolds, George Burgess and Issac Luke – with Reynolds taking out MVP honours. Click here to read more.
To date, the Club have faced a variety of opponents at the tournament including; the St George Illawarra Dragons (2014), the Melbourne Storm (2014 & 2015), the Penrith Panthers (2014 & 2015), the New Zealand Warriors (2014), the North Queensland Cowboys (2015), the Newcastle Knights (2015), the Parramatta Eels (2015) and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks (2015).
This year, the Nines tournament will see the Club clash with traditional rivals the Sydney Roosters for the very first time in the tournament in what is sure to be a thrilling opener to proceedings on Saturday, while also later renewing their Nines rivalry with the Storm and Eels during the pool stage.
Stay tuned to Rabbitohs.com.au for the announcement of our 2016 Auckland Nines team!

If we can take anything out of that, it's that just like in the 13 a side game, good defense wins matches.

We scored an almost identical number of points in the two previous comps and this is interesting because we only played 4 games in the first series as opposed to 6 last year.

The points against stat is the really telling one.

Spot on.

Ball security is very important too.

Where it shows the points for and against, that was just for the pool stage. It's the 3 games that every team plays.

Well done Bryson. Great first run.

Good chase from Bryson on Cody's bad first grubber.

Great committment Bryson.

Well done Auva'a he just scored

Cody Walker is rusty.

We are playing bash and barge:lol:

Oi alien the ref is Cecchin:roll: No wonder the penalties are against us 2-0.

That bloody Cecchin:x

Souths best so far alien is BRYSON GOODWIN FOR EFFORT. I don't care if he missed a tackle.

Terrible from Clark. Extremely costly.

Just terrible.

Cook has added spark.

McInnes played like a dud.

Souths are asleep alien.

What's Oldfield doing. I'll tell you, Jack shit.

Wendell Sailor just said Oldfield was too relaxed and lazy. Should have stopped Joe Burgess.

Our kicking game is shit alien without Reynolds. My oath it is.

Musgrove what a bad knock on.

Good run by McInnes, why did he kick it????? He does something good then undoes it all. No no no no no Cam.

What game are you watching rabbits20, cam mcinnes was one of our best, especially in defence. Cook didn't really show much.
Bryson got caught out a few times with his reads, but since it's 9s I'll cut him some slack

yeah he didn't sprint until too late. he had to run across field to get to it. i think he thought our winger was going to get it.

at least he scored after though

souths won by 1 anyway :)

Checcin wasn't the ref either so that conspiracy can be put to rest like it was last year when you brought it up R20

McInnes was a bit inconsistent.

He improved towards the end.

Cook added spark triple M said.

Bryson made a very good run at the beginning and chased Cody's terrible kick hard.

Bryson gave his all. Madge will be happy.

Hunt did nothing!!!!

I expected more from Cody, where is shadow????

I'm listening to triple M. It sounded like Cecchin.

Was probably Gerard Sutton then.

My mistake, they sound the same:lol:

I'm getting ready for Cecchin though:lol:
