Look on the bright side... At this rate they'll raise the funds before the Sun goes red giant and obliterates us all.

Best estimate for that is currently 5.4 billion years.

It'll be a close race but I think the society will win.

ARU are looking to something similiar with western force

an Australian first, Western Australians will have the opportunity to own part of a sporting team.

RugbyWA today announced that they would be implementing an innovative new ownership model to secure the future of the Western Force Super Rugby team.

The decision comes in direct response to mounting speculation that the Australian Rugby Union is planning to cut one of the five Australian Super Rugby franchise teams at the end of the 2017 season due to financial pressure.

From today, Western Australians can register their interest in being part of Australian sporting history by purchasing ownership of the Western Force at www.owntheforce.com.au

The new ownership model will be based on the sale of 5,000 ownership certificates at a value of $1,000 each, payable over a period of twelve months. Unlike stocks or shares, the certificates would not be transferrable except to family members. Owners would be entitled to a range of benefits including:

  • Voting rights to an advisory committee and the new Western Force board of management,
  • Approval of the reappointment of key positions within the Western Force organisation,
  • Input into match day and team activities and specific owner’s functions, and
  • A range of discounts on both Western Force membership purchases and Rugby WA player registration fees.

Not similar in the fact it's being offered by Rugby WA - the Society is fan driven.

This has been tried by a few lower tier sports in Australia over the years, and usually failed.

The Cairns Taipans tried it about 10 years ago, and it went nowhere, so they had to go cap in hand to the local Council.

Its going to be extremely hard to get 5000 people to stump up a grand to only get "a discount" on a season membership and have a non-transferable share in a private ownership scenario. If your that much of a hard core fan, you get better value investing in a season membership outright (for what $300/400?).

If anything, this sounds like the death knell of the Force.

You could go to the local brothel and get f**ked 4 times by a decent looking bird for that, instead of once by a clapped out old dragon....

Greetings friend. Do you wish to look as happy as me? Well you've got the power inside you right now! So use it! And send $1075 to Apey instead. Don't delay, eternal happiness is just $1075 away.

If you don't unplug that phone right now, you're sleeping on the lawn.
