Media Release:

The NRL today welcomed the naming of the first club sponsor for the Toyota Cup and said that the move underlined both the importance of the competition in showcasing young talent and also its emphasis on building young careers on and off the field.

The Panthers today announced a two-year sponsorship deal with Teach NSW to support their under 20s team in next season’s inaugural Toyota Cup.

The sponsorship deal aims to attract people of all ages to teaching careers, especially male primary teachers, and is groundbreaking in that it already has 24 emerging Toyota Cup players from Penrith employed as teachers aides.
“This is a significant partnership, not just for the Panthers but for the status of the under 20s competition,” NRL Chief Executive David Gallop said today.

“The Toyota Cup is an exciting development in our game and it is encouraging to see that Penrith has been able to use this competition to establish a partnership that will not only benefit their club but the local community as well.”

Toyota Cup Manager Michael Buettner also welcomed the sponsorship deal.

“Congratulations to the Panthers for securing a sponsorship deal of this magnitude,” Mr Buettner said today.

“I think it reflects the excitement surrounding this new competition.

“The under 20s is going to attract a lot of interest as it showcases the future stars of our game, and the Panthers’ professional approach to this competition recognises that.

“This partnership continues the tremendous work the Penrith club has done with its Panthers On the Prowl Program. It will not only benefit the community but the young players at the club who have acted as teachers aides.”

An article from the Panthers website...

Jul 26 - Teach NSW has signed a deal that will promote teacher recruitment through sponsoring the Panthers National Youth 20’s team.

‘Teach NSW’ is the teacher recruitment arm of the NSW Department of Education and Training.

With the new National Youth competition beginning in 2008, Teach NSW will be the major sponsor of the team for the next two years, with an option for a third.

The primary objective of the sponsorship is to attract people of all ages in to Teaching, where there is an acute shortage in some fields (especially male Primary School Teachers).

This partnership is groundbreaking in that it already has 24 emerging NYC players employed as Teachers Aides where they obtain professional skills and income as well as benefiting their community in a field where there is a severe shortage of male Teachers.

“This partnership allows us to promote Teaching as a vocation to a diverse audience ranging from impending school leavers to mature aged adults looking for a career change,” said Director of Staffing Services Peter Johnson. “It will not only promote and increase the profile of the ‘Teach NSW’ Teacher recruitment campaign but will also demonstrate the many advantages of teaching as a profession, with many of the young men in this NYC team currently working as Teachers Aides”.

“We are very proud to partner Teach NSW who is an esteemed and respected community serving organisation,” said Shannon Donato, Business Development Manager of Penrith Panthers. “Increasing their profile and engagement with the Rugby Leagues audience through this sponsorship will benefit the wider NSW community and particularly that of Sydney’s Greater West.

“This is also the first NYC Major Sponsor to be announced by any club across the NRL and we look forward to partnering Teach to further growth and success”, Shannon said.

“Congratulations to the Panthers for securing a sponsorship deal of this magnitude,” Toyota Cup manager Michael Buettner said today.

It will not only benefit the community but the young players at the club who have acted as teachers aids.”

In conjunction to announcing the major sponsorship, Panthers have named Steve Georgalis as Head Coach of the National Youth 20’s team.

“Steve is a well respected coach here at the Panthers,” General Manager of Rugby League, Michael Leary said today. “He has played over 250 first grade games in the NRL and UK Super League in his career.

“He is currently our Premier League coach but next year we want Steve to be coaching our elite players in the National Youth competition. We want to make sure our players have the best coaching and the best opportunities available to them; Steve is an integral part of that”.

That's the beauty of this probably being on TV and having decent viewer numbers - most teams will be able to find a sponser to cover most costs you would imagine.
