TV coverage in Melbourne Pubs

I've just had a call from a publican in Melbourne who says he having all sorts of trouble of getting the State of Origin live on his screens.
He says that some other larger places, such as the Crown Casino have the game live but when he telephoned the NRL to ask if he could get it, they simply said, "It can't be done."

Now this guy isnt asking for a freebie. He is willing to pay for the coverage. He has all the satellite and cable in place and wants to get rugby league in his pub for his patrons.

Its especially frustrating when we know the game is being televised live to NZ, the UK, PNG and even Vanuatu... but not Melbourne.

Does anyone know of any pubs in Melbourne where the League fans can watch the greatest game of all?

Tell the publican that if he can tune his satellite dish to get anything from Darwin he'll be able to get it live.

This is the way most pubs that show it get around it.

The normal places that use to do this don't seem to be doing it this year. (Not sure if Nine got wind of it).

I bet that if Melbourne had a NSW vs Qld State Of Origin game played here that Channel Nein would televise live against the gate.

I know that one pub in Melbourne has tried to get the live feed and could not get it
As far as I know the only place is the All Star. (with a cover charge I think).

This has made me so mad having to wait until 11.00pm

Also...the Sports bar at the Casino....they had 12 huge screens and were screening every sport game there was lat time I was there.

If you can arrange a crowd I'm sure they can screen them.

The club used to organise a SOO party where the game was shown. I guess they didn't make much out of them or they would still have them... If the All Star show game 2, I think I'll be in there to watch it. $10, big screen, and a bar... sounds good to me!!
Do Storm members still get cheaper drinks there??

Nine sould lose the broadcasts of sports they dont want to/wont show.
Give it to a free to air network (maybe Ch7?) and if they dont want it, show it live on Foxsports.

I live for the day the broadcasting rights change, then we might see our great sport get some coverage.

Yeah, but Crown is a Kerry Packer venture - of course they'll get a live feed.

If Ch 9 weren't showing it live into Melbourne because of something really important it wouldn't be so bad. But there's no excuse.

Then if they did then you would then have to get tickets do it and not worry about TV coverage.

If SOO was played in Melbourne then guaranteed I'd be there!

In 2002 Storm's games were shown live on Channel Nein and I still went to every home game bar one, and even went to one away match.

Did showing the games live into Melbourne was agood move or did it really affect crowds?

it cost the club some crowds, although i understand why they did it. they desperately needed coverage and exposure and that was the only way channel 9 would agree to show their games. the games being at 3 pm saturday every single week doesn't help crowd numbers as ppl had other activities like their kids' sports day for example.

Looks like a trip to crown tonight. Decide when I get there about watching at the all star or not, but most likely just the big screen with a cold frothy in my hand

Hi,

I just posted this info on another thread, but then noticed this one. Impaja TV (a free to air satellite channel from Central Australia) show the matches at pretty much the same time as Channel 9 Sydney (so live SOO & GF etc). The footprint covers much of SA, Vic and Tas ... not sure about WA). I am pretty sure that they use the same satellite that Austar uses, so if you have a dish pointing at the satellite already, then it should only be a small one-off cost to get the Impaja signal.

Hope this helps.
