Tweed Heads Seagulls - since 1909?

Just wanting to tap into the collective historical knowledge of QRL people on this forum...

This is based on a discussion on another thread about how long RL has been played in the Gold Coast-Tweed Heads area. I instantly thought it was 1909 (due to the date given by the Seagulls club for its foundation) but apparently this has never been verified.

The Tweed Head club claims to have been founded in 1909 but other evidence suggests that the game wasn't played in the area until 1914 (when Souths played an exhibition match there) with nothing else (found yet) that verifies anything before this (perhaps Tweed Heads was originally founded in 1909 as an RU club from which the confusion arises?)

I first thought it would be relatively easy to see when the Tweed Heads club started to play - though this is difficult because the CRL Group competition (18) they played in wasn't established until 1966 (and the CRL wasn't founded itself until 1934).

I then tried to find when they first began to play in the Brisbane/Queensland competition as some kind of guide. I know that the Valleys-Seagulls joint-venture played in 1988 State League and won the competition but were a version of the Seagulls in the competition prior to this?

Any random information appreciated. :D

The club is now known as Tweed Seagulls. However, the original club was actually Seagulls RLFC and they just happened to based at Tweed Heads.

The club was actually founded back in the 1890s (will check year at home), because it was originally a rugby union club. When RL was first played there (1910 I think), a number of clubs switched codes - All Blacks, Old Boys, Seagulls etc.

The failed joint venture with Valleys only lasted for 1987 and 1988 - '88 is where they won the premiership. The original Seagulls in Brisbane was Wynnum-Manly.

Aha! Originally a RU club.

That makes sense of the 1909 v 1914 dates.

But, if they were founded in the 1890s then where does 1909 come from are they actually claiming to have played since 1909 (that brings us back to the drawing board)? :?

Thanks for your help! :)

It doesnt suprise me that Seagulls is a former rugby union club. you'll find that most of the older Brisbane RL clubs have ties back to rugby union. Have a look here http://www.qru.com.au/qru/qru.rugby/page/62691 at the Hospital Challenge Winners, and most of the clubs switched to league sooner or later. Past Grammar (Norths Devils), South Brisbane (played 1909-1914), North Brisbane (1909-1914, merged with Toowong to become Western Suburbs in 1915), Christian Brothers (Past Brothers). Toombul played in 1909 and maybe 1910, but did not play after that - it may be the same club as Toombul & Nundah that won the Hospital Cup in 1903. Likewise Valleys could well be the same club as the RU one, simply playing in both codes.

Incidently, Rugby league has a lot more in common with the GPS schools than I originally thought. Past Grammars was formed as an old boys club for BGS (http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/gpsrugby/history.htm) , Brothers old Boys was formed as an old boys club for Gregory Terrace (http://brothersoldboys.rugbynet.com.au/default.asp?id=58716)

I think that 2nd site u listed in relation to GPS schools is not actually the site for GPS Schoolboys rugby but the site for the GPS club.

You're right, it is for the GPS Gallopers Rugby club, but does say that the Union arm of Past Grammars, which reformed towards the end of the 1920s

eventually became GPS in 1931 after a change of constitution, which broadened its membership beyond old boys of Brisbane Grammar.
